How One Working Mom Finds Work/Life Balance

TiffanyShlainTiffany Shlain knows a thing or two about juggling. She’s a successful filmmaker with a million side projects (like her AOL On Originals series) and she’s a wife and mother of two.

So how does Shlain create that seemingly impossible work/life balance that so many working mothers crave? For one thing, she says it’s important to have flexibility with your work, whether you’re a man or a woman. She also believes that modern technology has helped working mothers tremendously:

Make your own schedule. Or talk to your boss about a more flexible schedule. I think that what the Internet has given our generation is this kind of flexibility to work in new, creative ways that our mothers did not have. I have friends who work for corporations, but most of my friends work from home as consultants or own their own business. I feel like the Internet was the tool that the feminist movement always needed.

Journalism Student Defends Major: ‘We’re Headed Into an Industry That is Alive and Kicking’

press hatMelanie Stone, journalism student at DePaul University, has just about had it with people badmouthing our industry.

In a Business Insider piece she writes:

“Everyone is hating on journalism, and I’m tired of it. Two years ago, I shipped off to college, wide-eyed and ready to write. I had plans: I would master the feature lede. I would abhor the Oxford comma. I would graduate with my journalism degree and run off to The Chicago Tribune where surely, surely I’d be hired to be the next page-two columnist.”

Disgruntled Employee Resigns by Posting Interpretive Dance Video & Gets Five Million Page Views!

An alum from the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism made a splash on the internet  courtesy of her resignation letter. And by letter we mean video.

Marina Shifrin worked for Next Media Animation and resigned by making a dance video to Kanye West’s “Gone” that lasted almost two minutes. Indicating she sacrificed “relationships, time and energy for this job,” she proclaimed, “I QUIT!”

Tired of writing for clicks and disenchanted with the quality of journalism in general thanks to page views, Shifrin wrote on her YouTube page:

“I work for an awesome company that makes news videos. I have put my entire life into this job, but my boss only cares about quantity, how fast we write and how many views each video gets. I believe it’s more important to focus on the quality of the content. When you learn to improve this, the views will come. Here is a little video I made explaining my feelings.”

The New York Women in Communications (NYWICI) program celebrated 10 mavericks as More’s editor-in-chief Lesley Jane Seymour emceed. Survey Reveals Emails are Constant Time Drain

According to Modeuro Consulting researchers from the University of Glasgow and U.K., when leaders ease up on their emails a whole lot of goodness starts happening.

Per a piece in The Wall Street Journal, they looked at seven executives in London and how they literally spent their waking hours. Results pointed to emails as a major time drain to the tune of 90 minutes per day. On average, executives emailed 56 times each day.  Read more

Daymon “Daym” Patterson: From Wal-Mart Manager to Travel Channel Host

Daymon PattersonIf you’re looking for ways to make the most out of your lunch break, just look to Daymon “Daym” Patterson‘s Daym Drops YouTube channel for inspiration (or drool-inducing entertainment).

By reviewing fast food during his own down time as a Wal-Mart assistant manager, Patterson amassed millions of views on YouTube, and is now the star of his own Travel Channel show, Best Daym Takeout, premiering July 31. For its latest feature, Mediabistro talked with the burgeoning star about how he used the video platform to take his career to a whole new level:

I started out filming my neighborhood, doing little news reports and uploading them. One day on my lunch break, I went to Burger King and had their French toast sticks, and I did a review of them in the car and put that on YouTube. It received like 134 views, whereas all the other videos were maybe like 30, 50 views. The following week, I went to Dunkin Donuts and I got their new frozen hot chocolate. That video caught over 300 views, and I thought, “OK, now I have something here.”

Top Execs Make the Case for Not Using E-mail

Got e-mails? If you’re constantly checking your in-box throughout the day, you’re not alone. Sure, experts have said you shouldn’t respond throughout the day because then you’re not tackling what really needs to get done but maybe this will build a stronger case for you. It certainly did for us.

A piece on BusinessWeek points out Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig told SportsBusiness Journal he has never used e-mail. And he “never will.”

He’s not the only one to live and successfully work without Outlook. According to the piece, Janet Napolitano has said she never uses e-mail either. The secretary of the Department of Homeland Security told reporters, “I think e-mail just sucks up time.” Read more
