To be successful (or even gainfully employed) in this era of industry uncertainty, it seems like you have to go above and beyond the general requirements. Read on to understand how easy it is to implement these little life hacks and keep your career in check.   

1. Be good to your body

Even though movies make it seem like members of the media pay rent by writing (whiskey in hand) in dark corners of empty bars, it’s not sustainable.

Taylor Lorenz, director of emerging platforms at The Hill, pays special attention to what she puts in her body. “It’s very hard to eat healthy while working in media,” she says. “Your schedule is often long and unpredictable–you’re either sitting in front of your desk or on the run for a story, [but] by prioritizing what goes into your body you can operate on a higher level by remaining healthy and more resilient.”

Lorenz never eats processed foods, limits her alcohol intake to less than two drinks a month, and drinks almost three gallons of water a day. “Lots of people think I’m a wacko health freak, but keeping my body healthy allows me to operate at maximum capacity and my diet has been critical to my professional success,” she says.

2. Stop obsessing over email

Have you ever caught yourself sitting there debating signing off Best or Sincerely, then backspace entirely, revert to your old-standby of Thanks! and get too stressed out to send the email? You’re not alone.

“I will deliberate over one message for half an hour ensuring that I’ve expressed myself clearly and kindly to a client or collaborator,” says Abby Carney, a freelance journalist and editor. But especially in the freelance game, time is money. Read over the message to make sure it’s free of errors, then fire it off.

3. Disconnect during downtime

We’re not just talking WiFi here. Try heading outside, away from any outlets.

Heather Whaling, founder and president of Geben Communication, avoids checking email, social media or taking calls when she’s at home with her young son. This may sound impossible as the head of a PR agency with offices across the midwest, but Whaling insists it’s actually added-value at the office.

“By incorporating these periods of disconnection into my schedule, I’m sharper and more creative when it’s time to focus on work,” she says.

4. Call your grandma

“I know the thought of a phone call paralyzes a lot of fellow millennials,” Lorenz acknowledges. “But there’s no replacement for a good heart to heart over a long phone call.”

You may even find it easier to dial 10 numbers instead of composing a tweet in exactly 140 characters proclaiming how much you miss your sister. Catching up with friends and family keeps things in perspective when life seems out of your control.

5. Know what’s happening in the world

Whether she’s in Chicago or Columbus, Whaling starts every morning with the New York Times. “[It] helps me get a frame of reference for the day, monitor trends that could be relevant to our clients and stay informed about current events,” she says.

Plus, reading today’s headlines not only helps you as a conversationalist at cocktail parties, but you’re also supporting your industry peers at the end of the day.

6. Pay attention to trends

Knowing what’s in the news will keep your consumption well-rounded, but you should also seek out specifics.

“I spend a lot of time keeping up on tech trends, researching forward-thinking brand campaigns and understanding how technology is changing communications and business,” says Whaling. “With that foundation, I’m able to help clients infuse innovation and creativity into their communication and take a fresh approach to best practices.”

7. Don’t just hashtag #goals, create them

Every day Lorenz looks at her list of long-term goals and her five and 10-year plans. Her weekly to-do’s are the background of her cell phone. And with a resume boasting companies like Time, Inc., Refinery29, Business Insider, and the Daily Mail, it’s safe to say she’s hitting her marks.

“I change my goals constantly,” she says. “But this way I make sure I’m always moving forward. This includes (but is not limited to) six detailed spreadsheets to make sure she’s on track.

8. Stay in school, kids

Learning to cook a meal, cut hair and apply makeup has very little to do with being a journalist, but Lorenz took classes in all three. Since graduating college, she’s been enrolled in at least one (if not two or three) classes outside of work.

“It’s so fun to learn new skills!” she says of her extracurricular studies on copywriting, creative writing, graphic design, advertising and marketing, to name a few. “[It] always broadens your horizons and keeps your mind fresh, even if you never put those skills to use.”

9. Connect with your community

Whaling recently rolled out a program allowing her employees to use up to 30 hours of “work time” to volunteer for for nonprofits they believe in.

“Of course, being involved in the community is the right thing to do from an altruistic perspective, but it’s also good for business,” she says. “By making community involvement a core component of my workflow, it helps me add value to causes I believe in, plus it generates new business opportunities.”

10. Block out your schedule ahead of time

And avoid the inbox timesuck.

“I used to spend so much time in my inbox that I was focusing on whatever happened to be at the top of my inbox, instead of focusing on the things that truly warranted my time and attention,” says Whaling. Now she  schedules three or four times per day to check emails for about 20 minutes each time. She quickly assesses each email, responding to those that take “less than two minutes of attention.” If it requires more brain power, she’ll “calendar block” time to take care of it.

11. Go old-school when list-making

Carney is meticulous when it comes to making lists. She keeps two “old-school” (paper) day planners to write in all of her appointments, social engagements, to-do lists and deadlines.

“I was highly neurotic [as a child] and panicked about missing any homework assignments,” she says. “I always wanted to make the best marks. I’m still the same when it comes to my career.”

12. Don’t blow your deadlines

Maybe the list-making does the trick, but word on the street is Carney doesn’t miss a deadline. As both a writer and editor, Carney contributes her success to staying ahead of schedule.

“I never imagined that anyone would blaze through a deadline or wait until the last minute to ask for an extension unless it was an emergency situation,” she says.

13. Realize what’s worth your time

“To be successful in journalism in 2016, I think you sadly can’t get stuck on making every assignment top-notch,” says Carney. With the Internet, inevitable deadlines, and an increase of content creation, sometimes speed is all that matters.

“You have to churn it out day after day, and hopefully if you churn enough, you’ll have more time to work on assignments that really matter to you, and you can write something you’re proud of,” says Carney, who speaks from experience as assistant editor at Time Out New York, which still prints weekly.

14. Give yourself a break

No matter your profession, it’s important to give yourself one night of nothing to recharge.

“Every week I spend four nights working on my freelance jobs, one night in class or teaching myself a new skill, one night either going to a talk, meetup, or event or socializing with friends,” Lorenz explains. The last night she treasures as her night off to cook, listen to music on her record player, or walk around the city.

“It can be tempting to skip my ‘night off’ and meet friends for dinner or to go out,” she says. But she protects it for her sanity’s sake, which isn’t a bad idea for us all to consider.

So, you had a job interview. Great!

Before you sit back and begin the waiting game, we’re here to tell you that your work is not done. Nope! You may be thinking that you kicked butt at your interview and you’re obviously a shoo-in. Or… maybe not. But did you know that your interview actually isn’t over yet? Yup, you’re still in the spotlight, and even if your interview went great, you can still mess up your job prospects.

Don’t sweat it! We want to tell you how you can help seal the deal—or at the very least get some clarity about your chances of getting the job. We’re here to talk about two types of emails you should send your prospective employer after your interview.

The first type of email we’re going to talk about should ALWAYS be sent.

Always always always always.

Always. Send. A thank-you.

The Thank-You Email

The nice thing about the thank-you email is that you really shouldn’t have to think too much about it. Think: short, sweet, and polite. That said, there are a couple of best practices to follow when sending your thank-you note.

Do Send your thank-you note very soon after the interview, preferably within 24 hours.

Do Make sure to address your interviewer(s) by name and send it to each person who interviewed you.

Do Include the words “Thank You” in the subject line so your interviewers understand that you’re not trying to hound them about the job right after the interview. Also include the title of the position you applied for to jog their memory. Something like “Thank You – Data Analyst Interview.”

Do Briefly mention your qualifications again.

Don’t Be long-winded. This isn’t your cover letter, round two. While it’s okay to restate why you think you’d be a great fit for the job and address any concerns the hiring manager may have had, it’s important to respect their time and keep your note to the point.

Don’t Make spelling or grammar mistakes. Even if you had a great interview, this could hurt you—a lot.

Pro tip: The key is to be genuine. Be genuine and friendly during the interview so you have something real to mention in your thank-you note, and then be genuinely grateful that you’re being considered for the position. Even if you’re nervous about getting the job, try to believe that you really are the best person for it—and your potential employer will think so too.
According to this survey, 80% of HR managers said it was either somewhat helpful or very helpful to receive a thank-you message from a candidate. Despite this, the study also found that only 24% of candidates ever sent one. Basically, if you’ve been looking for a way to stand out, this could be it.

Thank-You Email Template

It was great to meet you in person! Thank you for having me by the office today and taking the time to talk more about COMPANY NAME and the POSITION TITLE role. It was also great meeting with OTHER INTERVIEWERS and learning about their experience at the company and getting more detail on the day-to-day responsibilities.

Michelle, who coaches candidates through the application and interview process at Scouted, explains why this template works:

“It’s long enough to show that the candidate put thought into it, but concise and to the point. It appropriately reinforces interest in the role with specific reasons why. It lists each person the candidate met, along with specific details from those chats. It’s enthusiastic and positive without using too many exclamation points.”

Now we get to our second type of follow-up email…

The “I Haven’t Heard Anything in a Week” Follow-Up Email

Now is the time when you become frustratingly familiar with the last email that popped into your inbox, desperately waiting for a new, unread message with your interviewer’s name on it.

You may be tempted to forgo a follow-up altogether, imagining the worst-case scenario: Did the manager laugh at you as soon as you left the room? Did you horribly offend them? Bore them? Did they see right through your fear of feeling like an imposter?

Here’s what we’re going to tell you:

Hiring managers are busy. They’re real people with a real workload—which might be heavier than usual seeing as they’re trying to hire someone.

Some hiring managers might even be happy to see your email pop into their inbox and think, “Right! I was supposed to email them three days ago!”

It’s with this mindset that you should follow up with your interviewer. If you were given a date by which they said they would get back to you and that date has come and gone, feel free to type up your email. If you weren’t given a date but it’s been over a week and you haven’t heard back, type away.

Guidelines for Following Up After an Interview

  • Always assume they’ve been busy.
  • Always be polite and thank them for interviewing you in the first place.
  • Remind them of your interview—bring up something specific you discussed so they remember you.
  • Address any concerns they may have had and reassure them that you’re a great fit.
  • Restate why you’d be a great fit for the role.
  • Ask if there is anything else or more information they need from you.
  • Leave a way to contact you, just in case.

Follow-Up Email Template

Dear HIRING MANAGER NAME,

I hope you’re doing well!

I wanted to follow up on my interview last week for the POSITION TITLE role. I’m still very excited about the opportunity and believe I’d be a great fit due to my experience in RELEVANT EXPERIENCE. I’m confident I could help your company GOAL FROM INTERVIEW.

You shouldn’t ever worry about sending a follow-up email to a prospective employer as long as you keep it short and sweet, grateful, and not pushy. Follow these guidelines, and your email will simply demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm for the position.

Lola Ogunnaike was working her way up the ranks as a features reporter, making the jump from the New York Daily News to the New York Times, when her career took its first lump in 2006: a one-week suspension from NYT, reportedly for appearing on The View without her editor’s permission.

“If you can really get the answer to that question, then you will be able to tell me something I don’t know,” said Ogunnaike, regarding the suspension. “I can’t answer that question because, at the end of the day, I don’t really know why.”

Regardless of the reason, Ogunnaike’s newfound national TV exposure didn’t go unnoticed as CNN made her an offer that she “couldn’t refuse,” ensuring that millions would know her as more than just a byline for years to come.

You’re one of the elite few freelancers who seem to get bylines and cover stories in all the big publications. If you had to name one thing that got you to that point, what would it be?

I have always had side hustles. So, when I was at the [New York] Daily News, I was on contract with Vibe magazine. When I was at The New York Times, I was often called to appear on television to discuss the pieces that I had written for the style section and the arts and leisure section. I’ve just always found that having my hand in many different pots has served me well over the years.

Every writer hates pitching. How much pitching do you do these days, and what’s the key to building great relationships with editors?

I don’t have to pitch nearly as much as I used to when I was young, because I’ve managed to cultivate some strong relationships with editors along with television producers. I think one of the key things is to make sure they know who you are. That can be as simple as asking them out for coffee or tea or asking them out to dinner and offering to pay for both of those things, which is very important.

But it’s also just following up with a link to a story that you may have written, something as simple as “You may not have gotten the chance to see my New York Times piece in the style section, thought you may be interested in this.” Things like that really go a long way, because the truth of the matter is, what I found in my years in the industry is that most people don’t follow up. So, if you actually do, then that puts you head and shoulders above the pack.

Where does your BET interview with Michelle Obama rank in the hundreds of interviews you’ve conducted in your career?

I think it’s safe to say that she’s number one. Meeting her was definitely its own unique and amazing experience, but actually interviewing her on the continent of Africa was also really powerful and a really full-circle moment for me given the fact that my parents are actually immigrants from Nigeria. For me to return to the motherland and interview the first black First Lady on the continent from where my parents came was just really powerful.

You earned your Master’s degree in journalism from NYU. What’s your stance on future journalists going to grad school in order to study the craft? Do you recommend it if you didn’t study it in undergrad?

If you studied journalism in undergrad, then I don’t think a graduate school degree in journalism is necessary. But if you’re new to the craft, I definitely think some education is required. Now, you might not decide to pay $70,000 or $80,000 for the degree; maybe you will take a series of classes on mediabistro.com.

But what I found is I think people underestimate how difficult journalism is. It’s not just sitting at your computer and spouting off your opinions about Beyoncé’s dress at the Met Gala. There is a structure to it, and I feel like that is sorely lacking in a lot of what’s being passed off as journalism today.

Why did you decide to leave New York Times for CNN in 2007? Looking back, would you do things differently?

I would absolutely not do anything differently. CNN made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse. I had been at The New York Times for five and a half years and I was ready to try something different. And when CNN comes knocking on your door, it’s really hard to say no.

How would you describe your time on American Morning at CNN?

The hours were absolutely brutal. You hear about people like the Matt Lauers and Katie Courics of the world making astronomical amounts of money — they completely deserve it because waking up at the crack of dawn is no joke. The show would begin at 6 a.m. and end at 9 a.m., which means we often had to be in the building by 4-4:30 a.m. And if you were turning a story for the next day, you essentially work anywhere between 12-15 hours.

With that said, it was a thrilling experience and I met some of the funniest and most entertaining people that I’ve ever had the chance to work with. CNN was definitely a blast.

How much would you credit your 2006 suspension from The New York Times for jump-starting your TV career?

I credit The View for jumpstarting my television career. When I appeared on The View, I mainly had been known to people as just a byline. So, when they saw a face attached to the byline, I think it just intrigued people more about who I was.

Getting the opportunity to go to lunch with Barbara Walters was a thrill of a lifetime as not many people can say they were able to do that and they’ve been able to do that. I’m very fortunate and whatever happened as a result of that experience was well worth it.

What obstacles did you have to overcome as a Nigerian woman in a mostly white male journalism industry?

One of the things that’s always been important to me as a journalist is making it clear to my editors and producers that I can do all sorts of stories. I can report on all sorts of stories. I think there’s an assumption that if you’re black or a woman, you will only want to write about things that interest women or subjects that interest black people.

For me, I’ve always wanted to make it clear to people that I’m not only curious about a number of things, but that I have the ability to report on a number of things as well.

What was your initial reaction when you heard that Beyoncé won first place in the Arts & Entertainment category of the New York Association of Black Journalists awards? Is this award a total slap in the face to real journalists?

You mean other than the fact that I didn’t win? [Laughs] I’m not outraged about it because I see it for what it is. To me, it was an obvious publicity stunt and it worked because you’re asking me about it and it got picked up everywhere. So, it’s a win-win for both parties involved if you’re taking the cynical look at it.

Now, would I have voted for her? No. I’m sure Beyoncé’s not losing sleep over the fact that she robbed a young journalist of their award. I’m sure she’s never even heard of the New York Association of Black Journalists.

How has social media helped you in covering celebrities? Have they made themselves too available to not only the media but also the general public?

Twitter has made my job a bit easier because you no longer have to wait for a publicist to give you a quote about an incident or not give you a quote about an incident. You can actually go to the celebrity’s Twitter page and usually find the answer right there.

And, as a reporting tool, I wasn’t on Twitter before I went to South Africa with the First Lady. Part of my contract for that project was I had to tweet from South Africa while I was there. I realized just how important it is, because I could give instant updates, and it allowed my readers and eventual viewers of the documentary to feel like they were really involved and instantly involved. I gave them a bird’s eye view of what it was like to travel with the First Lady.

I sent pictures of her with her daughters and her grandmother. I sent pictures of Secret Service men. I gave them updates of what it was like to be in the motorcade and all of those things. I came to understand just how important of a tool Twitter and Facebook can be if employed properly.

Tell us what led you to start your own lifestyle brand, WORKS by Nicole Williams?

Essentially it was a personal experience that launched this company. I grew up in a small town in Canada, just across the border from Detroit, a very blue-collar industrial town. My mom worked in the local paint factory, which pretty much everyone in town did.

When I was a little kid, she would come home and drop off McDonald’s and head to the casino or bar or whatever was up for that night, and I could see the degree to which working in this capacity that didn’t fulfill you, that didn’t excite you, really affected the rest of your life.

Seventy percent of your waking life is spent at work, so if you hate your work, you’re inevitably going to not enjoy the rest of your life. And so I was very young asking the question of anyone who would answer, ‘What do you do for a living? How did you get to do that? Where did you go to school? How much do you make? What kind of skills do you have?’

My first career job was with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. I was their director of career and technology. From there, I just used my own career as a testing method.

I’d be like, ‘OK, how do you get a raise? Well, let me try this, let me see how this works…’ And I think what I realized is that, for a lot of young women, it’s not about building a resume. It’s a lot of soft skill; it’s a lot of just the person you are and the people you surround yourself with. You know, those elements have so much more to do with your potential for success than pretty much anything else.

So I was always focused on more of the lifestyle elements of career, and that’s how this business came to be.

How did you eventually branch out on your own and come up with the concept for your business?

I stayed [at the CNIB] for about a year and a half, and what happened for me was I loved working with individual people on their career. It was truly thrilling.

But at a certain point, I started to understand that I wanted to create content that would help more than just one person. And at the time, our program was federally funded, and the program was being audited by an outside consulting firm and they looked at one of the programs I developed and they decided to institute that nationally. And that was sort of my first foray into more of a macro level of career development.

I was looking at Martha Stewart’s model of taking content that an individual can consume and use to better her life and bringing that to the masses. Her model is, frankly, quite brilliant. And from there, I was like, ‘OK, could this be a book? Could this be a television show? Could this be a line of career clothing?’

And essentially, that’s what I’ve built. I did a line with The Limited, I have three books, one of which is being turned into a movie.

What do you consider your career philosophy?

It’s funny, the time at which I was thinking about this business and [my first] book and could I grow this, I remember one of my friends was reading Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins. And I read these two sentences [that resonated with me]: ‘The price of self-destiny is never cheap, and in certain circumstances it’s unthinkable. But to achieve the marvelous, it is precisely the unthinkable that must be thought.’

You know, no one in my family had gone to [college]. It really was unthinkable for me to have graduated university, to have worked at the CNIB. These were jobs and opportunities that so far exceeded what the expectations were for me in my life.

That somehow is true to the way I want to live and the philosophy I want to espouse as part of this business. And literally in that day, I wrote down a list of everything that was unthinkable for me, and it included being on the Today show, it included creating a television show for the Oxygen Network, which I ended up doing. It was to publish with the largest publishing house in the world. It was to get a six-figure advance. These were all jokes at the time.

And as I started to accomplish those unthinkables, I started to really develop that philosophy as it pertains to career. So I’m a big believer in stretching that muscle. And, yes, there’s work attached to that. It doesn’t just come true because you believe that it will. But it’s essentially an orientation that helps you to see opportunity in the world that you might not otherwise.

How can job seekers market themselves during these tough economic times?

Ten, 15 years ago, when I was getting my book published, the vice president of Penguin was sitting in on my meeting. And for some reason, I had done an Internet search and knew that this guy came from Toronto, Canada, which is where I was born, and it was that affinity that allowed me to get a record-breaking advance. We got a quarter of a million dollars for a book on careers, which never happens!

Use every method possible to prepare yourself and then to market yourself so that you’re someone that gets noticed. There are opportunities out there. And sometimes in a bad economy there’s actually more opportunity than less. It’s just a matter of going after it more strategically.

And I think now, because of the Internet and social media, that ‘strategically’ becomes much easier because there’s a platform like LinkedIn, where you’re able to really create a professional brand from soup to nuts and demonstrate who you are as a professional, upload examples of the work that you’ve done, and put that along with an amazing photograph that allows an employer to envision you in this particular situation.

As LinkedIn’s career expert, give us your top three tips for optimizing your profile.

OK so the first is a picture. Profiles that contain a photograph are 11 times more likely to be viewed than those that don’t. And I use the analogy of either the online dating site or the real estate site, where you’ve got this wonderful description, but no photograph. And your instant fear is that it’s decrepit, like there’s a reason why there’s no photograph, and/or it’s not legitimate.

And this profile shot is meant to be professional. A lot of young people I encounter, they’re taking the picture of themselves on the beach, or with their boyfriend, or with their dog, and those kinds of photos in this instance are really, frankly, inappropriate. It doesn’t have to be a professionally taken headshot, but you want this to exude some level of professionalism. I like smiles. I think you can exude a lot of energy when you smile.

Secondly, people think that, ‘OK, I’m just going to post my most recent position.’ But in a lot of instances, employers are looking for someone with 10 years’ work experience, and a lot of the skill sets are transferable.

So even though you worked in marketing and you’re looking for a web design job, you definitely want to have both of those opportunities listed. And we know that profiles that list more than one job are 12 times more likely to be viewed by a hiring manager.

This is kind of different than what we were accustomed to in a resume, in which you only had one page. In this instance, you’ve got as much space as you need to demonstrate who you are as a professional. You also want to upload presentations, works, decks, your portfolio. Allow your work to speak for itself.

Then share content. LinkedIn offers an influencer program whereby you can essentially get mentored by these amazing business people, like Bill Gates and Meg Whitman, and you can literally just share an article, share a quote of inspiration. Sharing [content] demonstrates that you’re active in your career, you’re invested in your career and you’re not just looking to take.

So what’s one big mistake that LinkedIn users often make?

Well, definitely it’s using the connection request that’s just the standardized, ‘I’d like you to be a part of my network.’ At the end of the day, this is a valuable request, and you’re making it of professionals who you have some relationship with.

But I could’ve met you five days ago and if you don’t contextualize where and you don’t contextualize why we would make a good connection, you’re likely to be ignored. So just always personalize that note. It doesn’t have to be a lengthy letter. It can just be: ‘Hey, great to talk to you, Valerie. Let’s connect.’

And I think one of the things that’s much different in the usage of LinkedIn versus Twitter or Facebook, it’s all about quality. It’s not about quantity. You could have 1,000, 2,000, 8,000 connections, but if none of these are people who know you as a professional, trust you as a professional, are willing to look out for opportunity or answer a professional question or introduce you to someone, they’re worthless.

So I’d rather someone have a smaller concentrated number of really valuable connections versus mass connections.

What else do professionals need to keep in mind when using social media, in general?

It’s consistency now that’s really so important.

It’s ensuring that all your social media platforms are sending the same professional message. Think about what your professional brand is: What kind of tone do you want to have, what kind of issues do you want to comment on, what kind of articles do you want to respond to? You’ve got to decide that early on, and then you’ve got to kind of have that theory in place so that you are using social media in an integrated fashion, where it’s all consistent.

Our personal lives are connected to our professional lives, and they tend to overlap in ways that we wouldn’t necessarily expect.

But just because it’s on Twitter or Facebook, don’t think that that space is personal so you can have whatever you want up there, because you’re still going to be judged by it. When it comes to your personal stuff, get a diary. You know, write some letters to your friends. Get a Gmail account that’s not attached to your company’s website or URL. Don’t think of social media as a personal place. I think that’s incredibly naïve.

Marrying video clips, cool sound effects, and cooler graphics sounds like one of the coolest jobs ever. No wonder you’re itching to be a video editor. We got a couple of video editors to tell you all about the job. Take a look at what they had to say and then get scratching.

What exactly does a video editor do?

A video editor uses footage, sound, and graphics to tell a story. A typical day in the life may include creating treatments and storyboards; developing scripts; producing and editing videos and photos for multiple platforms, from short-form daily content for social media platforms to long-form series; and sourcing and/or creating and adding graphics, animations, special effects, music, sound effects, and sound bites.

A video editor also makes decisions about maximizing the content’s value online and helps align the final version of the piece to the appropriate distribution platform, says Elizabeth Giorgi, founder and CEO of internet video production company Mighteor. Audience development and working with members of other departments or an editorial team to ensure consistent and comprehensive content may also be part of the daily grind.

“It is my job to turn raw footage shot by a photographer into a compelling video,” says David Abrams, an auto test video editor/photographer at Consumer Reports. Though you may work with a producer or use a script to guide you, the overall tone of each piece is in the editor’s hands, says Abrams, so whether or not a video accomplishes its goals is often decided in the editing suite.

What skills does a video editor need?

“Storytelling is the number one skill a video editor must have,” says Abrams, noting you must see the video through the eyes of your audience and consider how your edits affect the story you’re telling.

Knowledge of editing tools such as Apple’s Final Cut Pro or Adobe’s Premiere Pro is key, says Abrams, who suggests taking a course or subscribing to a teaching site such as lynda.com to develop your skill set.

Adds Giorgi, “Experience with After Effects, color grading and sound software, as well as the latest in mobile, will make you an invaluable asset.”

Attention to detail and the ability to think laterally and visually are also important.

Who is a video editor’s supervisor?

A video editor at a startup may report to the CEO, while a video editor at a larger company may report to the digital content editor.

How do I get ahead in this position?

Stay abreast of the latest and greatest in technology and digital trends, and never stop honing your editing skills—this includes learning and adapting to new tools.

How can someone break into this field?

Broadcast journalism programs “teach all the basics as well as the guts of storytelling,” says Giorgi. But, if college isn’t your cup of tea—hey, everything isn’t for everybody—don’t count yourself out. If you can get your hands on a computer and editing software, you’re good to go.

“This field tends to value experience over formal education,” adds Abrams. “Your ability to edit and tell stories is far more valuable than [a] degree hanging on your wall.”

You’ve put in work managing the EIC’s calendar, replying to reader mail and maybe even writing short items. It’s time you apply for that assistant editor position you’re not-so-secretly dying for. What exactly does an assistant editor do?

No matter what type of publication — print, digital, fashion, sports, interior design — an assistant editor’s primary responsibility is taking on assignments in collaboration with the editors and EIC. Routine tasks typically include conceptualizing and pitching stories, conducting research, interviewing sources, writing and editing copy, selecting photos and art to accompany articles, and proofreading. Some assistant editors may also manage social media accounts, and repurpose and curate content.

“Because VIBE is a smaller media company, I might have more tasks assigned to my role,” said Stacy-Ann Ellis, assistant editor. “Aside from assigning, cleaning and prepping pieces for publication, I shoot photography for features, determine the visual elements to accompany our larger pieces, keep track of staff and freelance deadlines, as well as write and shoot feature pieces for myself. It’s a lot.”

What skills does an assistant editor need?

The ability to write clear, concise copy (oftentimes in a hurry) is the most important, said Mary Kaarto, author and speaker. Kaarto spent 22 years working as an assistant editor for various trade publications. “A good assistant editor should be able to provide valid information in as few words as possible, yet make it enjoyable to read,” said Kaarto. You should also be able to generate creative and competitive stories. It doesn’t matter how well you write, if the story is uninspired, no one will read it, she added.

And you should definitely be skilled in prioritizing a hectic workload, said Ellis, as well as effectively communicating with staff members and working quickly and cleanly.

Being a self-starter and willing to take on any task, from opening mail to answering phones, is also a major deal, added Devon Warren, managing editor at Arts & Crafts magazine publisher Stampington & Company.

Who is an assistant editor’s supervisor?

If you work for a smaller publication as Kaarto did, you’ll likely report directly to the magazine’s editor. At a larger publication or website, an assistant editor may work for a specific section, such as news or fashion, in which case she might report to the editor of that section.

How important are digital skills?

“Nowadays, digital publication employers want multi-hyphenates who can do their own job and jump in to do someone else’s job if need be,” said Ellis. “That’s just the way it is.”

What does it take to excel in this position?

The ability to quickly solve problems in a pinch is vital to your success in this position, said Kaarto, who suggests keeping a backlog of timely filler material on hand for emergencies.

Organizing your time well and offering to assist your colleagues will cast you in a favorable light, advised Warren. And be adaptable, added Ellis. Nowadays, everything’s in flux, so staying ahead of the curve is more important than ever.

How can I break into this field?

A degree, preferably in English or journalism, helps. So does having a couple of internships under your belt. And while you’re gaining all that (unpaid) experience, network. Ellis advises that hard work and making — and maintaining — good connections pays off.
