Bono Can Sure Make a World Cup Spot Feel Like a Political Statement

As Pop Candy says, this new ESPN spot called “United” for the Fifa World Cup sure feels like a PSA thanks to the narration of one Bono, who chimes in that the event is not about “religion”, “politics”, “the economy”, “oil,” etc. But consider Bono’s non-U2 projects over the years, hit the mute button and you’d think otherwise.

Regardless, it’s one of the more electric World Cup ads promoting the beloved soccer tournament, which Bono and his bandmates have been all over for a while. Not only did they appear in W+K‘s 2006 ESPN/World Cup campaign, but their song “Magnificent” provides the soundtrack for this ad, which apparently is just one of a series of five you can expect to roll out in the coming weeks/months.
