Canadian Designers Would Prefer Anniversary Logo that Doesn’t Suck

2017 will mark Canada’s 150th anniversary, and the Canadian government is already testing logos for the event. Unfortunately, those logos are terrible.

Ibraheem Youssef, a graphic designer who has worked in the field for over 14 years, saw the designs and was appalled at their lack of quality. Other designers were equally disgusted when he showed them the proposed logos. So Youssef “went forth and contacted a group of esteemed, professional and award winning Canadian Graphic Designers and Art Directors and challenged them to create something better than what is currently being circulated in the media…” The results can be seen at Youssef’s website. Needless to say, the logos put together by Youssef and his team put the government proposed logos to shame. Some personal favorites are Andrew Passas‘ maple leaf design, and Brooke Hennessy‘s logo turning a 5 into a loon.

Youssef’s team seem to be getting some attention, with a feature in CBC news just last night (which you can view above) bringing the story to the public’s attention. But the effort to find a better logo for Canada’s anniversary is far from over. If you’re a Canadian designer and would like to contribute, you can email Youssef with your design before the second wave of logos is launched on the 16th. We hope the Canadian government comes to its senses and chooses a design from those on Youssef’s website, rather than the atrocities they currently seem to be considering. Big ups to Mike Lloyd of Lloyds Art dot com for this sweet t-shirt design. That’s me when I used to have a pervy stache, holding a freshly baked tray of communism. Power to the proletariat!
