Schumer Calls for FTC Action on H1N1 Scam Ads

While awards shows have their own issues with handling scam ads, New York senator Chuck Schumer is taking on cons of a different sort, namely those slinging H1N1 remedies that are apparently anything but.

According to News Channel 34, Schumer is requesting that the Federal Trade Commission take swift action against online peddlers who are behind phony products like “Ionic Silver” that supposedly cure/inoculate those with the swine flu H1N1 virus.

In a statement, Schumer says, “It is almost incomprehensible that these companies are using Americans’ fears in a time of national emergency to make a quick buck. These companies need to be shut down, and quickly, so that not a single dollar more is spent on these fictitious cures and prevention methods.”

Schumer is asking the FTC to pretty much eradicate the companies and the associated websites. The report also claims that the FDA has identified 140 different products making these false claims being sold online.
