UNCF, Y&R Go Beyond Donations, Asking for ‘Investment in the Future’

Since 1944, the United Negro College Fund has operated under the banner “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste.” Today, they’re updating to the too-long slogan “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste But a Wonderful Thing to Invest In.”

Regardless of its verbosity, Y&R New York and the Ad Council’s new campaign is a smart, relevant adaptation. Instead of accepting donations for their fund, UNCF is “taking the cause straight to where the money is,” and has created the first-ever stock for social change. Columbia University economist Clive Belfield created an algorithm to determine the value of a share, which investors can purchase via Better Futures’ website.

The Better Futures campaign puts concept into practice, and shows people that they’re not just giving money, they’re investing in future generations. Y&R’s pro bono work will include print and TV PSAs that “use real stories from real UNCF students to show how that investment will pay dividends for all our futures,” says Michael L. Lomax, president/CEO of UNCF, in a statement. If investors are inspired to get involved, the Better Futures stock could be Wall Street’s most meaningful.

Y&R Resurrects NHL History in Time for Stanley Cup Playoffs

With the NHL playoffs looming, Y&R has launched the 2011 version of its History Will Be Made campaign, which like last year’s installment, will likely tug at hockey fans’ heartstrings. The 2010 effort, featuring legendary playoff moments from some NHL greats like Bobby Orr, was dubbed one of the most successful campaigns in the sport’s history, driving more than 302 million TV viewers to the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, in turn making it the most watched in 36 years according to the NHL PR machine.

The first pair of spots will debut on March 13 during the broadcast of the Chicago Blackhawks vs Washington Capitals game and 20 additional spots will appear April 13, the first day of the playoffs, through the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final with a new spot each day, highlighting a key moment from the previous night’s games.

Y&R, NHL Done Asking Questions

It’s been quite an offseason for Washington Capitals captain and three-time Ted Lindsay award-winner, Alex Ovechkin. After the #1-ranked Capitals were upset in the first round of the playoffs, Ovechkin had to watch as the Chicago Blackhawks won their first Stanley Cup in 60 years. While he sat at home, Wrigleyville went wild, and for the next week the Stanley Cup traveled around Chicago, getting immensely sticky from all of the different kinds of alcohol that the drunk NHL Champions had poured into the trophy.

So, this year, Ovechkin has something to prove. Much like Y&R, which once told us that there are “no words” that can describe the feeling of winning a Stanley Cup, there are no words needed to describing how much Ovechkin and Montreal’s Mike Cammalleri want another shot at the NHL Championship. This year, they’ll get their shot.
