Fmr. Illinois Governor/Convicted Felon Stars in Spirit Airline Ad

Discount airline Spirit is no stranger to controversial, distasteful ads. Since 2006, Spirit’s marketing has touched on such generally taboo subjects as disgraced politicians, venereal disease and MILFs. Hey, an airline promising $14 for a flight halfway across the country must be joking, right?

One of Spirit Airlines’ most famous past targets was former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich. Best known for attempting to sell President Obama‘s vacant U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder and for a hair duel with Donald Trump on Celebrity Apprentice, Blagojevich and the massive media blitz behind him are now coming to an end. In June, Blago was found guilty on 17 of 20 corruption charges, and earlier this week, we found out his crimes are resulting in a 14-year prison sentence, of which he is expected to serve 11 years and nine months. Accordingly, Spirit is celebrating the 14-year sentence with a $14 airfare and the above ad which throws Blago’s famous hairdo on top of honest Abe’s. Whoever art directed that must have had an absolutely wonderful time doing so.

Not only did the people of Illinois feel comfort that justice had finally been served in their state, but they felt elated at the prospect of being able to fly from O’Hare to LaGuardia for as low as $14 one way. With the Bears in such rough shape that rumors of the ol’ gunslinger’s interest in the Windy City abounded, Chicagoans needed a reason to celebrate this holiday season. I’ll see you in February, NYC.

After Alleged C-K ‘Walk Out,’ Mandelbaum Finds New Gig

We’ve often wondered, when we’re alone at night before we go to sleep, where former Cramer-Krasselt “digital innovation director” Brian Mandelbaum could have gone after he allegedly “just picked up and left” his post at C-K and fled into the cold Chicago night. Yes, that Brian Mandelbaum, the one of reality show fame and studly Hollywood good looks – the man who once danced with Wyclef Jean and was fired by Donald Trump for being late. Where would this ad veteran with over a decade of industry experience under his belt go to next?

Well, he’s joining AdoTube as vice president of platform development in the company’s Chicago office. What’s AdoTube? We’re glad you asked. AdoTube is “a complete in-stream/in-video solution that enables each part of the industry (agencies, advertisers and publishers) to have easy and efficient access to in-stream ads.” We’re left to wonder, is this move away from agencies permanent for Mandelbaum? Or, is he just taking a much-needed break after a career that’s included stints at C-K, Saatchi & Saatchi and Razorfish? While you’re left deep in thought, here’s Mandelbaum and Wyclef to hold you over.

Grey Does its Part for Japan Relief

While most of the media attention has turned to the royal wedding (which baffles us) and whatever Donald Trump spews out (even more so) this week, there’s of course still a crisis happening in Japan. To do its part to help the disaster-hit nation, Grey is following the lead of other agencies like BBH by launching a charity effort of its own in the form of an online auction. Titled SOS, the auction, which kicks off today and runs through May 5, features everything from concert/theater tickets and an iPad 2 to framed photographer prints and accessories from Armani.  You can commence bidding here before you go back to your regularly scheduled William/Kate media saturation.
