Grey SF, Norton ‘Boldly Go’ Over the Top

Grey San Francisco has created a new rebranding campaign for Norton that demonstrates a certain flair for the dramatic.

The anthem ad at the center of the campaign features lines like “The boldest gift has yet to be given,” “The boldest file has yet to be downloaded, without a second thought” and “The boldest life is out there.” At its conclusion, the spot advises, “Go boldly and you will find bliss.”

To us, this message translates as: “Go ahead and download that torrent; your antivirus software can handle it.”

Our protagonist–presumably so excited by Norton’s software that he can’t contain himself–proceeds to triumphantly rip off his own shirt. Maybe it was the confidence that came from knowing that his photo folders are safe…even if they’re not on the cloud.

Digital ads will appear on CBS News, CNN, Forbes and YouTube, with print ads planned for The Wall Street Journal and Forbes.

McGarryBowen Unveils Olympics Campaign for United

With the opening ceremony just a day away, and Sochi apparently still in shambles, McGarryBowen has unveiled their Winter Olympic campaign for United Airlines.

The friendly 60 second spot, entitled “Welcome Aboard, Team USA” is as straightforward as that title implies. Athletes from speed skaters to curlers (yay curling!) board the plane in ways representing their respective sports (the speed skater glides into the terminal, ski jumper is loaded onto a conveyer, figure skater twirls and stores her overhead, etc.), while the United crew is all smiles — even when the captain stops a curling stone with his foot. “Welcome Aboard, Team USA” ends with the tagline “Team USA Friendly,” followed by United’s revived “Fly The Friendly Skies” slogan. The athlete-filled spot should stoke viewers’ excitement for the games, and act as a friendly reminder of United’s sponsorship of Team USA. Credits after the jump. Read more

Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s: The Sexiest Names in Fast Food

It’s been years since I’ve seen a Hardee’s. I think there might be one outside of Lambeau Field in Green Bay? And, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Carl’s Jr. Maybe that’s just a West Coast thing? I honestly don’t know.

Regardless, when the restaurant chains’ owner CKE announced in January that they were taking their ad business to El Segundo, California-based David&Goliath, our commenters were hoping that maybe, just maybe, D&G would find a way to “elevate the work.” It’s hard to believe (or is it) that it’s already been over three years since the company’s former AOR, Mendelsohn Zien, had Paris Hilton rubbing her soaped-up body all over a car while eating a Carl’s Jr. cheeseburger. Indeed, next to Paris Hilton, that burger looked very, very sexy.

What crazy new direction would D&G take in for their first spot as the brands’ AOR? Apparently, they’re still using scantily-clad models eating the chains’ sandwiches in slow-motion to lure the horny-man demographic to the restaurants. The big difference is that this a turkey sandwich the model is eating. It’s under 500 calories which, according to a press release, qualifies it for Men’s Health‘s list of “Eat this, not that.” And, hey, anything without Paris Hilton is a definitely upgrade.
