Kobe Bryant, Lionel Richie (!?) Star in New Nike/Foot Locker Spot from W+K

W+K’s trademark nonsensical humor is on full display in their latest, the new spot “Made by Kobe” promoting Kobe Bryant‘s Kobe 9 Collection for Nike, which launched on March 6th.

The spot imagines what it would be like if Kobe Bryant designed a piano: “It will turn piano boys into piano men. It will make Lionel Richie‘s tears cry tears.” Lionel Richie actually appears in the spot, tear slowly rolling down his cheek while he plays the piano, adding to the humorous tone. After talking up the hypothetical Kobe Piano, which looks pretty badass, the narrator introduces the “Made by Kobe*” Kobe 9 Collection. Although the product reveal comes 50 seconds into the 75 second spot, the sidelined Lakers star can be seen wearing his new line throughout the commercial.

The spot is exactly what we’ve come to expect from W+K, calling to mind some of their well-known past hits, like their famous work for Old Spice. The formula may be starting to show signs of age, but W+K still has a big leg up on the countless competitors attempting to imitate this kind of work. “Made by Kobe” will run until March 27th. Nike, W+K Portland Unveil Star-Studded ‘Winning in a Winter Wonderland’ Spot


W+K Portland tapped some of the world’s greatest athletes for their new holiday spot touting the advantages of Nike Hyperwarm Performance Baselayer, directed by Rupert Sanders. ”Winning in a Winter Wonderland” features the talents of Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, skier Julia Mancuso, snowboarder Scotty Lago, soccer stars Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux, and former Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, who now appears to be headed to Seattle. Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer also makes a brief cameo appearance.

While undeniably cheesy (hey, it’s the holidays) the spot does an admirable job at promoting the Nike Hyperwarm Performance Baselayer. People are prone to listen to endorsements from star athletes, and W+K got a wide, varied group together for the spot. They emphasize that the Nike Hyperwarm Performance Baselayer makes playing in cold, harsh conditions seem almost enjoyable by keeping you warm without restricting movement, perfectly matching the song selection. “Winning in a Winter Wonderland,” of course, changes the words of the holiday classic, which gets a bit cringe-worthy in spots but mostly comes across as cheesy holiday fun. The words are sung by the star athletes in the spot, mostly while in action, and they seem to have a lot of fun with it — which makes it hard to hate.

The campaign features both a one minute and thirty second version of the spot, as well as a digital takeover and social media elements.”Winning in a Winter Wonderland” premiered during college football’s Big Ten NCAA Championship game and will run throughout the holiday season. The Faces of L.L. Bean Light Up the Holidays

Meet A.J., a sales associate at an L.L. Bean retail store somewhere in America. Having worked in clothing retail for a good number of years, I can tell you with great certainty that A.J.’s an overachiever. If his portrayal in this holiday campaign for L.L. Bean from GSD&M is an accurate depiction of A.J.’s expansive knowledge of the clothing he sells, his manager must love him and his co-workers must secretly despise him, making a special point not to invite him out to after work drinks at the local Maine tavern.

Thankfully, not every employee in this TV and online campaign is as unlikable as A.J. For example, we have Jason, the enthusiastic, no nonsense, heavily accented leather cutter. Be honest, wouldn’t you love it if you knew your boots were cut by this guy?

And then there’s Nicole, a “comfort-seller” who works in the L.L. Bean footwear department. A.J. could really learn a valuable lesson from Nicole’s dedication to her customer’s happiness. Remember, A.J., instead of being a suck up and memorizing totally useless information about your store’s products, just be kind and courteous, like Nicole. That’s why she gets to go out for drinks and you’re stuck at home with only your mesh pockets to keep you warm.

GSD&M’s First Work For Goodyear: Pass or Fail?

Here’s a look at the first work from the folks at GSD&M for Goodyear tires since the Austin-based agency won the account in April of last year. Dubbed “More Driven,” this campaign highlights some of the brand’s achievements from being the official tire of NASCAR to the first tires on the moon and the tires that broke the land-speed record while also being the tire of choice for U.S. military vehicles, Southwest Airlines, FedEx, Hollywood stunt drivers, the presidential limo and so on.

With all that said, the whole idea behind this campaign is that Goodyear wants to convey that it’s taking everything it’s learned over the years and applying it to the tires they roll out for you, the consumer. This campaign was completed during the brief Mike Wilson era at GSD&M, which developed a font based on the Goodyear logo that “that allows bold statements to be made over aggressive imagery.” We guess by “aggressive imagery,” they mean the pseudo-heavy metal combined with fast cars that showcase the might of Goodyear tires. Can you just feel the testosterone flowing?
