MOFILM Adds Latest Chapter to ‘Greatness Awaits’ for Playstation

Playstation teamed up with MOFILM for the latest installment in the ongoing “Greatness Awaits” campaign promoting the PS4, which debuted during Sunday Night Football’s San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos’ game.

While last year’s installment from BBH New York at least felt like it tweaked the formula a little bit, the latest iteration of “Greatness Awaits” struggles to differentiate itself from its past. The 60-second “Friendly Competition” opens with two buddies throwing it down on the basketball court. “What do you got?” asks one friend. “I’ve got Kevin Durant,” the other replies, and morphs into the gaming version of the NBA star. From here, the friends find themselves thrown into a series of games in a now very familiar formula, set to Daft Punk’s “Contact,” ending with Destiny and the “Greatness Awaits” tagline. Maybe it’s just that it’s been used so much, both in and out of this particular campaign, but the approach now feels somewhat stale and “Friendly Competition” does little to expand upon or revitalize it. Ex-CP+B ECD Roper Heads to EnergyBBDO (Updated)

TimRoper1After spending the last two years as a writer/director at production company Partizan, Tim Roper has returned to the agency world, joining up with EnergyBBDO in “a senior creative capacity” according to sources familiar with the matter.

Roper, who we’ve been told arrived at the Chicago-based agency last month, spent the majority of his ad career at Crispin Porter + Bogusky–15 years in all–moving from Miami to the L.A. office over a decade ago and eventually settling in its Boulder HQ before leaving for Partizan in 2012. No word yet on his exact title at EnergyBBDO (we’re hearing ECD), but during his lengthy stay at CP+B, Roper worked on campaigns including the Burger King “Simpsonize Me” effort, the Will Arnett-starring Hulu spots and Sprite “Sublymonal.” During his career, Roper also worked early on as a copywriter/CD at Mullen.

Update: We received the following tip, clarifying Roper’s role at EngergyBBDO: “Tim Roper is a still a Director and committed to that role industry-wide. He is one of those rare talents who can do both. Currently he is assisting Energy BBDO and CCO Mark Taylor in an ECD capacity on several pieces of business. Duration, yet to be [determined].”

Roper, CP+B Part Ways

We’ve received confirmation that Crispin Porter + Bogusky and ECD Tim Roper “mutually decided it was the right time” to part ways. From what sources familiar with the matter tell us, Roper is leaving to pursue his main passion these days, which is directing (he most recently wrote and helmed the Hulu/Will Arnett work including the Super Bowl spot). Roper spent 15 years at CP+B give or take, and among other things, served as a copywriter in the agency’s Miami office early on before moving up to creative director at the first incarnation of its L.A. branch in the early aughts.

During his later years at Crispin, Roper led creative for not only Hulu, but for agency clients ranging from Sprite to Volkswagen. Here’s an official comment from CP+B CEO Andrew Keller: “Tim Roper has been a great asset to our creative team during his time at CP+B. He has a number of other interests and we are in agreement that now is the perfect time for him to pursue them. We thank him for his contributions to the agency and wish him tremendous success moving forward.”
