Target Needs to Bone Up on its Spanish History

Target is in apology mode after the brand’s attempt at capitalizing on World Cup fever resulted in a slightly epic fail. The chain just pulled a boys’ small T-shirt from 700 or so stores and its website that bared the Spanish flag among other things.

The problem? The flag featuring an eagle over the emblem hasn’t been displayed in Spain since 1978 since it was associated with the regime of dictator/human rights abuser General Francisco Franco.

In a statement, Target spokesman Joshua Thomas says, “We certainly apologize for any discomfort or offense this shirt may have caused.” Target is offering full refunds for any of these shirts that were purchased, though we’re sure eBay listings will be popping up any second now.
