E-ink Revenues Up & Down in April

E-ink Holdings has announced that its revenues for April 2011 were only around 3 quarters that of March 2011. April consolidated revenues were NT$2.465 billion (US$84 million), which is also an increase of 45.41% over April 2010.  Combined revenues for the first 4 months of 2011 were up 87% over 2010, according to the company.

The drop in revenue is attributed to  shipment delays. Hydis Technologies, E-ink’s LCD subsidiary, has delayed some shipments of FFS panels to the third quarter of 2011.

I wonder who is not getting the screens? Amazon, B&N (NookColor), who?

E-ink: No New Screen Tech Until 2012

Sriram  Peruvemba, the VP of Marketing at E-ink, stopped by the CNet offices yesterday . He showed off how thin and flexible the E-ink screen can be and give a few updates on the state of E-ink’s next generation screen. it won’t be coming out until 2012.

Oh, well. I guess we’ll have to content ourselves with E-ink’s other screen tech. Have you seen the NookColor? Its screen is based on FFS technology that was developed by Hydis, an E-ink subsidiary. Now, the actual screen was made by LG Display, but it licensed the  tech from E-ink.

E-ink Reports Sales Up In 2010

E-ink Holding,, maker of the E-ink screen technology, released its financial results for 2010 this week. Sales for 2010 totaled NT$ 25.2 billion, which is up 57% over that of 2009. Net income for 2010 was after tax of NT$4 billion, another record high.

This news comes shortly after Samsung formally opened its new screen tech R&D center in the Netherlands, which brings another heavyweight into the industry. With  AUO supporting Sipix, Qualcomm and Mirasol, Bridgestone with its QR-LPD, 2011 looks like ot could be an interesting year for screen tech.

And don’t forget Pixel Qi, which has already taken a strong lead over its bigger and better financed competitors.

Horodron E-ink Watch

This beauty was posted to the Yanko Design blog. It’s a concept watch, which means they don’t plan to produce it. The design was created to explore an idea of using E-ink for the face of a watch.

This watch is a double-down in that it uses E-ink to for both form and function, allowing the bold and radical lines to make the watch beautiful and very readily visible. This watch is made of glossy black metal, embellished with small chrome parts. The display is adjusted with two buttons along the left side of the watch. The bottom display is the lighter gray of the background being used as the numbers display with the black merging with the black of the watch metal. Blasting off into hard bold, bold space with a metal stone.

Bookeen Demoes High Speed Video On An E-ink Screen

Bookeen posted this 19 second clip on its blog today. I think this could be the highest frame rate I’ve ever seen on an E-ink screen, but don’t plan on seeing an e-reader with this ability any time soon.  When the refresh rate is this fast, E-ink actually consumes more battery life than LCD.

AUO Shipped 400 Thousand Sipix Screens In 2010

AUO, manufacturer and developer of screen tech, released some details today on how many Sipix screens it made last year. According to my source, AUO made 400,000 Sipix screens, which gave it about a 4% share of the 10 million epaper screens made last year. The other 90% plus was made by E-ink, of course. AUO also stated that it expects to ship between 3.2 and 4 million screens in 2011.

The Sipix screen was originally supposed to be released in April, but it was delayed until August due to quality control issues. It was widely touted as being a competitor to E-ink screens, but I don’t think that will happen. The Sipix screen is a noticeably inferior product when compared to an E-ink screen. This is a topic I’ve covered before (over on my blog), so I won’t repeat myself here.

So, AUO believes that E-ink made nearly 10 million screens last year. I believe them. This niche in the screen industry is small enough that they all have a good idea about what the other is doing.

E-ink Reports Revenues up for January 2011

E-ink Corp, maker of the screens used in the Kindle, Sony, and other ereaders, released a report today on its January revenues.  In spite of predictions that tablets would kill off ereaders, E-ink revenues were NT$3.88 billion ($134.21 million USD) for January 2011, up 5% from December and 147% on year.

This is a fairly good increase considering that considering that E-ink’s total revenues for last year were NT$25.18 billion. I’m expecting E-ink to continue to increase this coming year; they don’t have any real competition yet from Mirasol, Pixel Qi, or Liquavista.
