Amazon Sees Record Digital Downloads On Christmas

Amazon had the most digital downloads ever on Christmas Day this year. This includes movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, books, audiobooks, apps and games.

During the holiday season, Amazon’s apps and games sales were up more than 250 percent over the same period last year. While Amazon still has a lot less apps than Apple’s App Store or Google Play, Amazon did almost tripled its selection of apps in 2012.

Amazon reported today that the Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle have held the top four spots on the company’s worldwide best seller charts since the company introduced these devices at the beginning of the holiday season.

Cyber Monday 2012 was Amazon’s biggest day for Kindle sales around the world ever and the most popular title to send as a Kindle book gift during the holiday season was The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail-but Some Don’t by Nate Silver.

Convert Your Handwriting into Digital Text

Do you love taking notes by hand? Using the TruGlide Stylus and Notes Plus for the iPad, this editor managed to digitize his scribbled notes (handwriting screenshot embedded above).

This editor has always dreamed of a way to convert his chicken scratch handwriting into a digital format, hoping to someday digitize years worth of journals. In fact, he drafted an early form of this post using Notes Plus, a stylus and an iPad. You can see our original handwriting above and the handwriting translation below.

If you want to do this at home, we’ve outlined the six step process below…

Amazon Removes, Then Restores Self-Published Star Wars Inspired Kindle Book

UPDATE: Amazon has contacted AppNewser to report that they have restored this title to the Kindle Store. We checked it out and it is now available.

Amazon has removed the self-published Stars Wars memoir A Long Time Ago: Growing up with and out of Star Wars from the Kindle Store citing trademark as the reason.

The author, Gib Van Ert explained the removal in an email to  Boing Boing. He writes that Amazon’s “emails are vague, but they seem to being saying that I have to have Lucasfilm’s permission before selling on their store a book that talks about Star Wars. It’s a crazy position–Star Wars is a massive pop cultural and generational phenomenon, as my book tries to explain through a personal narrative.”

According to the book’s Amazon listing, it is a personal memoir about growing up in the era of Star Wars. Here is more from the book’s description: “Some time in the summer of 1977, sitting in the back seat of a borrowed station wagon at the only drive-in in town, Gib van Ert saw the first ninety minutes of a film that changed his world–and the world in general–forever. Then he fell asleep. So began a torrid thirty-five-year love affair with Star Wars, complete with infatuation, lust, devotion, jealousy, betrayal, despair, separation and reconciliation.” Amazon is still selling the print edition of the book, which confuses the issue. Tyra Banks App Teaches Users How To ‘Smize’

Talk show hostess Tyra Banks has a new app available that teaches users how to smile with their eyes, aka “smize.”

The $.99 iOS Smize Yourself app gives users lessons in how to “smize” through photos and videos. Users can then add their own images and the app will add a “smile.” These images can be shared with friends via Facebook and Twitter.

“On America’s Top Model, I’ve always told my girls to smile with their eyes. We call it `smizing.’ Over the years, it’s actually become part of pop culture,” Banks told USA Today. ”I would be walking down the street and girls would say, ‘Smize!’ So many people asked me, ‘Tyra, am I doing it right?’ I decided to do an app. It does it for you, but exaggerates it, and makes it more like a fun bar tool or at-lunch tool.”

Siri-al Killer Movie

Out of all the videos we shared on AppNewser this year, one video was the clear favorite of our readers.

Here’s more about the Siri horror movie: “There ws even one that satirized horror movies (with Siri as the psycho killer, of course). Today I have a video that isn’t intended to be silly. Here’s a real techno-horror short film with Siri as the star. It’s quite well done.”
