RIM Exceeds Expectations, Sells A Million BlackBerry 10 Phones

Research in Motion sold 6 million smartphones for the fiscal fourth quarter 2013, including about a million BlackBerry 10 devices, the company revealed in its financial report released on Thursday. The 1 million units sold exceeded expectations. Analysts had predicted about 915,000 units to sell during the quarter, according to reports.

Here is more from the financial report: “Revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013 was approximately $2.7 billion, down $49 million or 2% from approximately $2.7 billion in the previous quarter and down 36% from $4.2 billion in the same quarter of fiscal 2012.”

The ¬†introduction of a new operating system and these new touchscreen phones last month were considered BlackBerry’s last ditch effort to stay relevant in the mobile business, which is now largely dominated by Apple and Android devices. The initial sales have analysts pleased. “I thought they were dead. This is a huge turnaround,” Peter Misek, an analyst at¬†Jefferies told The Washington Post.

In the financial statement, BlackBerry also revealed that it shipped approximately 370,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets during the quarter.
