"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Katie Tarbox: The FishbowlDC Interview

tarboxfish.jpgSay hello to Washington Life's Editorial Director Katie Tarbox:

How many suits do you own? 2. They're boring, drab and say "I wear the J. Crew uniform like the rest of the twenty-something world." I have a killer blazer collection though.

What word do you routinely misspell? Wednesday. It's so bad that when autotype comes up I just press return because I don't trust I can spell it.

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? Yes, with my grandmother who shared that she doesn't understand it, but accepts it.

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? No. Don't plan to either.

What's the name of your cell phone ring? Silence. I do not like to answer my cell phone.

What time did you get up this morning? 6:21 a.m.

When did you last cry and why? When I went to see my grandmother in the hospital last week, but when I went to see "Borat," during the infamous bedroom scene, I laughed so hard I cried.

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? Gluttony (which is not so bad for my dinner parties).

Beach, city or country? What about the bush? Is that a choice? My favorite spot I've visited was in South Africa in the Kruger National Park. I really could do any of the options though.

Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? Cute. I hope I'm cute because I definitely try to go that angle.

What color is your bathroom? Grey, it's stone and it's what came with my apartment. I do have a picture of a monkey on the toilet hanging in it though.

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? 150, and can the city of Rockville please take me off their press list because I don't need to know that they've planted a garden or put in a parking ban.

What's your opinion of New York City? I love everything but the price.

What's your favorite letter? K

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? My English teacher at St. Paul's, Mr. Carlisle, who told me that even the most ordinary lives are worth writing about, which inspired me to write my first book, "A Girls Life Online."

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? No, I want to, because I listen to the same songs over and over again.

Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? I like individual performances like Paris's version of "Midnight Train to Georgia," and Fantasia's take of "Something to Talk About." Obviously, I have a season pass on Tivo.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? Once upon a Prom, today when I got our 510(c )3 forms back.

Who is your favorite active journalist? I really, really like Malcolm Gladwell's work. Dominick Dunne as well.

Nhat did you have for breakfast? Non-fat, extra hot, half-shot cappuccino with a splash of cinnamon from Starbucks. Yeah, I am that annoying person in line that wants the drink perfect.

What's your favorite item of clothing? A pair of Jimmy Choos with a hint of zebra on them that always get compliments.

What one toiletry item could you not live without? Kiehl's moisturizer.

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? To see into the future.

Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? It's really a tough question because I like the more wholesome message of GIJoe, but Barbie unfortunately does paint the truth that beauty will take you to the Malibu dream house. I think it's better to be direct with children.
