"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones NewspapersTuesday May 13, 2008
Brown Sticks Up For WaPo's Style SectionThe Style section is like the Washington Post's version of Keith Olbermann: You either love it, or hate it. Erik Wemple chimed in on the Style section last week, prompting the Washington Post's Deneen Brown to write this internal note to her Style colleagues, obtained by FishbowlDC, to staffers: Style is a great section. It is as great today as it was yesterday. The talent in Style is tremendous. Each writer has a distinctive voice. It is the collective of those voices that makes it a great. We all know that writing is subjective. There will be those who love us and those who think otherwise. In the meantime, I say we must continue to write, pushing our writing and styles to the very edge. Nikki Giovanni once said: "You must do, say, write that which you belive to be true. What others think can be of no consequence." And this is what Margaret Atwood writes about writing with confidence: "The only way you can write the truth is to assume that what you set down will never be read. Not by any other person and not even by yourself at some later date, otherwise you begin excusing yourself. You must see writing as emerging like a long scroll of ink from the index finger of your right hand; you must see your left hand erasing it." Date Lab UpdateThe most recent edition of the Post's Date Lab ended the way the vast majority of them have -- with no second date. Said one of the daters:
This brings the total ratio to 34 successful dates out of 92, or just under 37 percent. More Changes At The Washington TimesWe've been keeping you abreast of the various changes going on at the Washington Times. E&P brings us the latest: The Washington Times, a daily that turned 25 last fall, plans to unveil a string of sweeping redesigns that will include a weekly national security section, a new electronic edition, and a Sunday paper that leads with a magazine-style opening section. Executive Editor John Solomon, who joined the paper just three months ago after stints at The Washington Post and The Associated Press, announced the moves that will begin with a Web site redesign on May 19. He said that will follow with a major new print format on June 2 that includes a first-ever electronic edition. Pictures Of Morning PapersMonday May 12, 2008
UPDATE: Mike ShepardEarlier, we reported that the home of the Washington Post's Mike Shepard tragically was lost to fire. Here's an update, posted on the Washington Post's internal message board: Just talked to Mike Shepard. They just signed papers to rent a place in [REDACTED], an apartment building in Chevy Chase. They will be moving there tomorrow. The apartment is not furnished, but many of their things have been restored and will be delivered to the apartmen soon. He will know by early next week what kinds of things he still needs. Mike says he and Sonia are overwhelmed by the generosity of the people here at the Post. He said that it's been a tough week and the support from so many people here really lifted their spirits. He will be out this week but expects to be back May 19. Examiner Tweaks Distribution StrategyThe Examiner (Washington, Baltimore, San Francisco) is doubling its circulation in newspaper racks and trimming its home delivery. From E&P: Clarity Media Group, which operates the free Examiner newspapers in Washington, D.C., Baltimore and San Francisco, plans to add a Sunday edition to each and expand the current Thursday editions, the company revealed Thursday. Home delivery, which had occurred on each day of the week, will be scaled back to only Thursday and Sunday, according to Clarity Media Group CEO Ryan McKibben. "We are shuffling assets that were of marginal value to better serve the reader pre-weekend and Sunday and on the web," he told E&P. "They have the most opportunity and the most demand." The moves take place on July 13 and accompany further upgrades to Examiner.com: "The Examiner’s internet presence continues to grow and mature. Newspaper websites associated with the Washington, Baltimore and San Francisco Examiners are being upgraded to better support local newsroom operations." Limbaugh Takes On Washington PostWe're on the fence about whether the Washington Post's decision to put a Rush Limbaugh / "Operation Chaos" story on the front page is a clever, unique move or the exact reason why the paper sometimes makes you go "Ugh." Either way, Rush Limbaugh doesn't like it. From DCRTV: "When you read it, you can't figure out what they concluded." So said Rush Limbaugh on his radio show today about the Washington Post, and other "mainstream" media outlets, reporting that the righty talk titan had "called off" his "Operation Chaos" campaign, which commanded Republicans to cast primary votes for Democrat Hillary Clinton. And reports that he'd "thrown his support to Obama," her party rival. Neither of which has occurred, Limbaugh alleged via WMAL and WCBM.....
