"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones Education Writers Association is looking for a Seminar Program Coordinator. Ari Shapiro: The FishbowlDC Interview
How many suits do you own? Four What word do you routinely misspell? The list is long. Prairie, vicious, dilemma, gauge, odyssey. One joy of radio is that no one outside of NPR sees my misspellings. Did you see Brokeback Mountain? Um, yes. Did you see The Da Vinci Code? I have a deeply visceral reaction to Tom Hanks. And not in a good way. I'm sure he's a very nice man, but I think his performances have been going downhill ever since Big. So, no. What's the name of your cell phone ring? I'm a cell phone ring minimalist. Vibrate during the day, outdoor at night, silent in the studio. What time did you get up this morning? 7:30 When did you last cry and why? Show me any movie on an airplane and I will cry. I don't know why. I think Little Miss Sunshine was the last movie I saw at altitude. Which of the seven deadly sins are you? I'm Jewish, we don't do sins. Beach, city or country? Short-term, beach. Long-term, city. Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? Another joy of radio – no one cares
What color is your bathroom? A blue/gray color. I can't remember the name. "Seattle sky" or "harbor fog" or something similarly evocative of the Pacific Northwest. How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? What's sad is that I know there's a tool on Outlook that I can use to count emails, but I don’t know how to do it. I'm a little techno-illiterate. Until recently I was pretty obsessive about keeping my inbox down to one screen, but I fell off the wagon a couple months ago. What's your opinion of New York City? I would need to make a lot more money to live there comfortably. What's your favorite letter? Scarlet. What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? My friend Rachel Levy, who said, "Why don't you apply for an internship at NPR?" Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? This American Life, and, because I should plug my editor's podcast here, NPR's "It's All Politics." Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? I'm trying really hard to remember the name of a single contestant, and all I can come up with is Sanjaya. And Kelly Clarkson. When's the last time you volunteered? Where? I've mentored the same kid through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program for about 6 years. We hang out every week; lately we've been doing a lot of bike riding and barbecuing. (That's another word I misspell. Barbecuing.) Who is your favorite active journalist? Nina Totenberg. I grew up listening to her on the radio every day, she gave me my first (unpaid) job at NPR (see above), she's got more chutzpah than anyone I know, and she can pull of a floor-length fur coat and chinchilla earmuffs like nobody's business. What did you have for breakfast? Granola (so sue me, I'm from Portland) mixed with plain yogurt, maple syrup, and a sliced banana. What's your favorite item of clothing? I love cashmere scarves in winter, but I always lose them. What one toiletry item could you not live without? There's a thing I wear to keep from grinding my teeth at night. I'm told that without it my teeth would be nubs. If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? The ability to control the mist sprayers in the Whole Foods produce section. Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? I was always a Thundercats kid. Email This Post |
