"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Joe Mathieu: The FishbowlDC Interview

20070912_XM_POTUS_053.jpgSay hello to Joe Mathieu, program director for XM Radio's POTUS '08 channel.

What word do you routinely misspell? Just one? Let's just say you would not want to read my copy.

What's the name of your cell phone ring? Phone Only. Exciting, eh?

What time did you get up this morning? 6:00 am ET

When did you last cry and why? June 26. When my baby girl was born.

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? Depends on the news flow, anywhere from 200 to 400. Now ask me how many I respond to.

What's your favorite letter? W. I never understood why so few people in broadcasting could pronounce it properly.

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? It would have to be Frank Barnako, who hired me at the CBS MarketWatch Radio Network (which he founded in his basement). He gave me some big opportunities and made me a better writer and performer. Frank has an incredible nose for a story and understands the audience. I ended-up getting his job when he left for another endeavor.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? Over the holidays with the Art of Elysium. I highly suggest that everyone check out this wonderful group dedicated to helping critically ill children. It's run by really great people.

Who is your favorite active journalist? I don't really have an Edward R. Murrow but I do admire the work of Tim Russert. His interviews are so strong. He demands, and most frequently gets, real answers. But, you know who I always tell my friends to read? Anthony Bourdain. Yes, he's a chef, but he's a real journalist. He knows how to tell a story better than most news reporters. He proved this in Beirut in 2006 when Israel started bombing.

What did you have for breakfast? I wanted pancakes and bacon. I had yogurt.

What one toiletry item could you not live without? Definitely floss. I wish more people would join me in this cause.

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? To be invisible. Just think of the stories you'd get!

Red or white wine? I have to pass on this one. I'm a big wine geek, proudly carrying my advanced certification with the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, and there are just too many variables here! I love a dry German Riesling or Gewürztraminer (whites) just as much as an old Brunello de Montalcino or Chateauneuf du Pape (reds). It all depends on the time and place. And what's for dinner.

PG-13 or R? Well, I guess I don't really care, but as I think about it, most of my favorite movies are PG.

Lincoln, Jefferson or Washington Memorial? There's something very powerful about standing at the Lincoln Memorial, looking across the reflecting pool to the capitol. That never gets old for me.

Leg or breast (chicken, of course) Leg. More flavor.

Friday night or Saturday night? Saturday night. I'm usually not at work and I can sleep-in the next day. Anyone know a good baby sitter?

"Wedding Crashers" or "Old School" Wedding Crashers. It was shot in my old neighborhood in DC.

The Palm or Cafe Milano? Cafe Milano. Yes, I know the food doesn't always justify the price. But, there's a great energy in the front room on a Friday or Saturday night.

Yankees or Red Sox Hopeless Red Sox fan -- I'm a New Englander who went to school in Boston. And I still cannot believe what's happened to this team. Curious how they got good after I left town…

Jenna or Barbara? Oh, common...

McSteamy or McDreamy? McMuffin.

Leno or Letterman? Letterman. He's been copied so many times that he can appear cliche, but don’t forget who did it first.

Stewart or Colbert? Well, there’d be no Colbert without Stewart, so I'll go with the man who started it all.

Boxers or briefs? Um, boxers.
