Mark Segraves: The FishbowlDC Interview

segravesmug.jpgSay hello to WTOP's Mark Segraves.

How many suits do you own? 5 including my tux, but I'm more of a slacks and sport coat kind of guy.

What word do you routinely misspell? Most multi-syllabic words ( had to spell check syllabic )

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? Affirmative, it made want to go fishing. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? Negative

What's the name of your cell phone ring? Vibrate

What time did you get up this morning? 5 am every fuckin' morning no matter how much I drink the night before

When did you last cry and why? Can't remember, but I'm sure it was watching some lame flick on lifetime, also cried when I left New Orleans a few days after the levees broke.

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? There are 7 deadly sins? Who knew?

Beach, city or country? BEACH, I was a bartender in Dewey Beach for longer than I can remember

Would you say you're cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful?
Does anybody actually answer this question? Mark Plotkin tells me I'm hot.

Read the rest when you click below...(and see previous FishbowlDC interviews: Julie Mason, David Shuster, Joe Curl, Alex Pareene, Peter Beinart, Jonah Goldberg, Megyn Kendall, Ana Marie Cox, Jim Brady, Howard Mortman, Amy Argetsinger, Jose Antonio Vargas, Chuck Todd, Tom Gottlieb, Kelly Ann Collins, David von Drehle, David Lat, Mark Leibovich, Zain Verjee, David Plotz, Paul Kane, Karen Travers, Mark Halperin, Hugo Gurdon, Greg Kelly,Ken Rudin, John Dickerson, Anne Schroeder, Spencer Ackerman, Bret Baier, Bob Sellers, Greta van Susteren, Danielle Jones, Jonathan Salant, John McCalla, Pam Hess, Ryan Grim, Marc Ambinder, Marty Kady, Jack Shafer, Annie Lou Bayly, Jerry Zremski, Charlie Cook, Dave Hughes, Howard Fineman, Katie Tarbox)

What color is your bathroom? Black and white, the shower curtain is a scene of Paris

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? Too fuckin' many, particularly bothersome are the ones asking me to respond to questionnaires.

What's your opinion of New York City? Scares the shit out of me, really. I've never been so intimidated by a place.

What's your favorite letter? Any FOIA response that isn't a denial is a great letter.

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? My family- My dad was a writer at the Washington Star, he would take me to Senators games and we'd go to the locker room, he'd take me to Blues Alley, the Cellar Door, and the Shoreham Blue Room and we'd go backstage. I learned at a young age that a press pass was an ALL-ACCESS pass to life. My Mother was a reporter at the Baltimore Sun, she taught me how journalists could have a positive impact on society. My wife is the one who re-directed me back to journalism after years of adrift.

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? Affirmative, many episodes of Lost and The Office as well as the Dick Cheney / Lewis Black speeches at the Correspondents Dinner. You couldn't download one without the other, I'll let you guess which one I listen to more.

Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? I'm ashamed to say that I have watched a few shows, but happy to say I couldn't name one contestant.

When's the last time you volunteered? Where? My wife and I are committed to community service, as were our parents. While she has dedicated her life to working in the non-profit sector I volunteer on a regular basis for groups like local United Ways, I recently helped out at Melwood and I raise money for my kids schools each year by winning the 'spookiest house on Capitol Hill" contest. Although this year I was robbed and only came in second place.

Who is your favorite active journalist? I love Pam Hess, the tall willowy brunette from UPI asking the best questions at the Pentagon briefings, and while she wouldn't answer the question when she took your survey, I will. Pam is HOT, she is also the Godmother of my youngest son. If you're interested I can hook you up with her. I also marvel at the gifted writing and incredible insight of Elisa Silverman at the Washington Post. She's living my dream and she knows it.

What did you have for breakfast? Breakfast, what's that?

What's your favorite item of clothing? I love my Jerry Garcia ties, I also have some tee shirts I'm pretty attached to.

What one toiletry item could you not live without? Mirror

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? Mind reading

Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? Both are undermining our society in such devious and insidious ways that it keeps me awake at night.
