"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones Monday, Jul 10
Hotline Profiles Silva, EmanuelSome snippets from the past two Friday media profiles from Hotline. Mark Silva, WH corr. for the Chicago Tribune.
Schenectady, N.Y., and it was boring. Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin got me through it, until they died, then I had to move on. In retrospect, of course, it was a great place to raise a family, and I'm glad mine raised me in a place like that. The logo of General Electric burned bright in the night sky, "GE in the Sky," I called it. What is your favorite book and why? "The Autobiography of Lincoln Steffens," for lack of another answer -- I could name ten, but none really stands alone. This one was inspirational for me at a vulnerable time in my life, when I decided to go to journalism school. What would be your last meal -- ever? Veuve Cliquot for starters, with oysters raw on the half shell, steamed shrimp, with a lot of Louisiana hot sauce, red potatoes, avocado. Three ice-cold Heinekens. Flan. A dark Cuban cigar and Hennessy XO. And finally, we're ending this feature with a question posed by the last interviewee. This is from Boston Globe's Peter Canellos: Do you think bloggers are journalists? Bloggers are journalists when they behave like journalists, when they hew to accuracy, a sense of fairness and a desire to move quickly with a well told and balanced story. They are not journalists when they skew their work with one-sided bias, half-baked information, misstatements and political or social agendas -- which fairly well describes most bloggers with whom I am familiar. There are many who operate in the first domain, and I welcome that. The Tribune's capital bureau publishes a blog, The Swamp. I recommend it.
What's your most embarrassing on-the-job moment? (Or as embarrassing as you'd like to reveal?) Election Night 1998 in Austin, TX. I secured an exclusive interview with then-Governor George W. Bush. In the interview, Gov. Bush called me "Mikey." I covered his 1994 campaign for Governor, and his early years in that job. I intro the interview, then toss back to Brit Hume, and Brit grilled me in a nice way on the "Mikey" nickname. I thought I was going to die. Name your favorite vacation spot. Greek Islands -- particularly love Kefalonia, Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete -- all are highly recommended as Honeymoon or great vacation spots. My wife and I went to Crete, Santorini, and Mykonos after we had a BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING in 2002. Spectacular places! Capital Grille on Pennsylvania Avenue for a Wedge salad, and a Porcini Rubbed Delmonico Steak with 8-year Aged Balsamic. Table 32 for the exact location. Email This Post |
