"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Morning Reading List, 07.15.08

july10 011.JPG

Good morning Washington. What area restaurant serves the above dessert tray? Let us know.

Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line or let us know in the tips box below.

We've got your morning mix of media Muesli after the jump...

Today's the birthday of Arianna Huffington and MSNBC. Congrats to ABC News PR head Emily Lenzner and Roll Call VP, who welcomed Benjamin Cherukuri into the world Sunday. It's the anniversary of Jimmy Carter's "malaise" speech. Politico's Playbook reports, "BIRTHDAY LOOKAHEAD -- Tuesday: Paul KANE (judging from our-email, this should be a federal holiday) ... Wednesday: Anita McBRIDE!" New York Magazine calls "the Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes and her fabulously grumpy dispatches," the best part of the "annual Television Critics Association Press Tour." Expect a new JibJab video today. TVNewser reports, "Blitzer, who does five miles on the treadmill every morning, tore his hamstring while working out last week." Greta van Susteren gets Brett Favre. A Hardball panel debates whether the controversial cover of Barack Obama in Muslim garb on the cover of the New Yorker is satire or slur. You think bull fighting is awful animal abuse. Today's "Angry Journalist" rant of the day: "Why do I think that Sam Zell is buying up these papers so that they CAN fail. Once they're all gone or ghosts of their former selves, it will be that much easier for the crooks on both sides of the aisle to completely gut this country." Check out today's White House Photo of the Day from Time.

Today's FishbowlDC comment of the day (with regards to yesterday's post on "Thrush Heads To Politico"): Reader "Junior3" writes, "It's one thing for others to refer to the Politico duo as VandeHarris, but isn't it sorta creepy that they refer to themselves that way?" Keep the FishbowlDC discussion going by dropping your comments here.

    MAGAZINES

  • Politico reports, "Cartoonists mixed on New Yorker cover"

  • Political Punch reports, "New Yorker Editor David Remnick Talks to ABC News About Cover Controversy." Jake Tapper writes:

Remnick also took issue with one part of my blog post on the subject yesterday. I wrote that "the sophisticates at The New Yorker have come up with a cover that is sure to get the magazine a lot of attention... no Upper East Side liberal -- no matter how superior they feel their intellect is -- should assume that just because they're mocking such ridiculousness, the illustration won't feed into the same beast in emails and other media. It's a recruitment poster for the right-wing. .. I would assume over at the Conde Nast building, they think it's droll."
Mr. Remnick took some umbrage with that. Not with the criticism per se, but my working-class tone.
"Playing the elitism card, when you, too, are from New York, and went to Dartmouth, I mean, that really doesn’t wash," Remnick told me. "I think it’s an easy card to play. Especially with the New Yorker, and, you know, I shouldn’t let you get away with it. You’re not exactly coming from a poor background or from an underfunded media outlet, and I don’t think that’s fair. I think it’s just not the level of thought and discourse that normally I see on your blog, and lot of other ones....I get the back and forth, I can live with that, but I thought that was kind of a cheap shot."

    WEST WING REPORTAGE

  • The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Salena Zito writes, "A long time good friend and sometimes much needed mentor, Tony Snow always made me want to be a better person. We shared a love of family, politics and music -- the only disagreement we ever had was over a questionable call in a play-off game between the Cincinnati Bengal's and Pittsburgh Steelers, the year the Steelers against all odds won the Super Bowl. I hope someday when I grow up, I can be half the person that Tony Snow was."

  • White House Chronicle presents, "A Farewell to Tony Snow"

  • CQ's Eric Pfeiffer shares his "own personal anecdote of an encounter with Mr. Snow."

  • Media Research Center President Brent Bozell has issued the following statement regarding Tony Snow’s passing: "The news of Tony Snow's death wasn't wholly unexpected, but it's still devastating. Tony was a man brimming with optimism and you just felt that if anyone could beat this cancer, he could do it. He was an absolute professional in his craft and always, always a gentleman. The conservative movement is diminished today and anyone who knew him is heartbroken for his wife, Jill, and his three children Kendall, Robbie, and Kristi."
