"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Morning Reading List, 07.25.08

july17 007.JPG

Good morning Washington.

Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line or let us know in the tips box below.

We've got your morning mix of media Muesli after the jump...

Was that the Fratto family in the White House briefing room yesterday? Playbook tells us that it's Eamon Javers birthday today. Most of you claim to not know someone who nominated THEMSELF for our "Hottest Media Types" contest. Today is Amy Holmes' birthday and yesterday was Dan Reilly's. It was a year ago this week that the Washington City Paper was sold and next Friday is Rush Limbaugh's 20th anniversary on national radio. Sunday is the last Chandra Levy Series article! Playbook reports, "Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) yesterday taunts the administration on the Senate floor with a big poster quoting 'Tony Fratto Perino, White House Spokesman.' (Wouldn't Peter be surprised?)" OKnox twits, "This is a shout-out to Dick Keil, Jon Garcia, and Bob Bateman for an evening of cold glasses of 'aspirational goals' for my 'time horizon.'" Uh-oh. Mr. "Thrill Up My Leg" Matthews went there last night on "Hardball." "The speech had a thrill factor..." Politico reports, "CapHillers love softball. Reporters love hacking, whacking things to death -- what better way to combine both than...the annual Hacks vs. Flacks softball game." Yeas and Nays reports, "Novak's Victim Speaks! 'Bob Novak is the one that hit me?!? ... That makes it a great story!'" Today's "Angry Journalist" rant of the day: "I'm angry with lazy reporters who write slooooow, can't come up with their own ideas and when I pitch an idea, they say it's stupid. That's how you talk to your editor? This is community journalism folks. Not every story (OK, hardly any) is going to be a Pulitzer Prise winner. Do the job, or get out. Quit whining and stop acting like you're overworked. Get off the cell phone with your friends, stop the personal email all day long and GET TO WORK. Don't think for a minute you're not being watched by management. They're looking for places to cut and you're all giving them a good place to start. That felt good!" Check out today's White House Photo of the Day from Time.

Among those who actually saw the Obama cover -- roughly half of the public -- the verdict was decidedly mixed. While 50% say it was okay for the New Yorker to publish the cover, 45% say it was not okay."

  • A release announced, "Leaders of the Society of Professional Journalists urge media outlets across the country to raise awareness of S. 2035, the Senate version of the Free Flow of Information Act, also known as the federal media shield bill. Time is of the essence, as the bill is expected to hit the Senate floor for a vote as early as Monday, July 28. To help in this endeavor, SPJ President Clint Brewer has penned an op-ed explaining why it is the Senate’s duty to pass the bill. 'This legislation is necessary for the future health of American democracy. The citizenry's right to monitor government and report on its actions is a cornerstone of this country. Passing this law is also a major step to keeping the size and scope of government's powers firmly in check. Our elected officials in the U.S. Senate need to provide that balance by voting in favor of the Shield bill,' Brewer wrote."
