"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Morning Reading List, 08.29.08

4345057.jpg

Good morning Washington.

Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line or let us know in the tips box below.

We've got your morning mix of media Muesli after the jump...

It's John McCain's 72nd birthday. Michael Jackson is 50. Former Senator David Pryor is 74. 12 years ago, Dick Morris resigned from the Clinton administration. It's Scott Brodbeck's birthday, and tomorrow, it's the birthday of the girl who pulled off a great party last night: Google's Ginny Hunt. Overwhelmingly, most of you are following the convention on C-SPAN and go to Roll Call for your reading needs. Today's "Angry Journalist" rant of the day: "We are just legal publishing on the internet away from being extinct. If all states begin allowing legals published on the internet, start re-training." Check out today's White House Photo of the Day from Time.

TV

  • An ABC release announced, "On August 27, night three of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, ABC News' primetime coverage averaged 3.48 million Total Viewers and a 1.1/3 among Adults 25-54. The coverage aired live across the country from 10-11:00 p.m., ET."

  • A NBC release announced, "On the third night of the Democratic National Convention, more than 7.564 million Americans turned to the networks of NBC News. With Brian Williams anchoring the network coverage live from Denver, NBC News led the night with 5.464 million total viewers, attracting 57% more than ABC and 55% more than CBS, per Nielsen Program Data."

  • A C-SPAN release announced, "All C-SPAN outlets -- television networks, online, and radio -- will feature week-long comprehensive coverage of the Republican National Convention from St. Paul, MN. C-SPAN is the only network providing viewers with live, gavel-to-gavel coverage of the party nominating process for the 2008 conventions. Viewer calls and reactions to the events of the day will follow each day’s floor coverage."

  • A Nielsen release announced, "Day three of the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday August 26, 2008 featured speeches by Vice Presidential nominee Sen. Joseph Biden and former President Bill Clinton and was carried live during prime time on eight networks -- ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, BET and TV One. While coverage varied by network, all eight aired live coverage from approximately 10-11PM (ET)." The findings include the fact that Clinton and Biden drew more viewers (24 million) than Michelle Obama (22.3 million) -- but fewer than Hillary Clinton (26 million)."

  • A release announced, "PBS/NewHour 2008 Democratic Convention Audience Ratings Trend Up for Wednesday Night Coverage."

  • MacNeil/Lehrer Productions and the Commission on Presidential Debates, presents: "DEBATING OUR DESTINY II" A Personal History of the Presidential Debates. Presidential debaters -- from Ford and Carter, through Bush and Kerry -- reflect on their high and lows in exclusive interviews with Jim Lehrer. Airs Tuesday, September 9th, on PBS (check local listings)."

    ONLINE MEDIA

  • "Comcast to make monthly Internet use cap official"

  • The Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism announced, "To get a sense of the online buzz during the conventions, PEJ is monitoring five online destinations each morning at 9 a.m. The sample includes the top political headline on the Drudge Report, top political headline on the Huffington Post, the political story most linked to by bloggers in the previous 48 hours, according to the blog aggregating site Technorati, the most emailed political story on Yahoo! News, and the most viewed political video on YouTube. For days, the mainstream media pushed the storyline that the convention might be something of a competition for attention between the Clintons and the party's nominee. And to some extent, our five online bellwethers suggest that today. The most emailed item on Yahoo! News dealt directly with that issue. It was a Politico story focused largely on the former president's speech, headlined "Bill and Hillary, at last, leave the stage."
