30 Layoffs Later, Solomon Tells Staffers, “You are the team we are moving forward with”

Washington Times Executive Editor John Solomon just finished addressing the newsroom, saying the paper’s “long national nightmare” is over.

The firing of some 30 staffers — from clerks to researchers to photographers and even the National Desk editor — is now concluded, he said.

“You are the team we are moving forward with,” Solomon said, adding that the paper lost “some good friends” in the last several weeks. He admitted frankly that the staff firings were difficult, saying those let go were all “good people” — “I would not like to go through this again.”

The new organization of the paper — reporters will now be assigned to specific assistant managing editors (for example AME for politics, National AME, AME for Security, etc.). Interim Managing Editor David Jones was promoted to permanent managing editor; Joe Weber got rid of the “interim” in interim Metro Editor, as well.

The Metro and Business section will soon fold into the A section as a new section — dubbed “Plugged In” — comes into existence. The new website has a “soft” rollout on May 16 but kicks into live coverage after that weekend on May 19.
