A Footnote to History
A bunch more developments and rumors out there today about Deep Throat and Watergate. John Dean, writing in the L.A. Times, says that someone told him that someone told Bob Woodward to tell Len Downie that Deep Throat is ill. Doesn’t that sound reliable? Perhaps they could all pass notes later today in study hall.
Also today the Baltimore Sun goes after Woodward’s poor sourcing of his books. While we agree with the idea of providing sources would this citation really make you feel any better? Headline: Richard Nixon Eats Babies. Source: Conversation with Deep Throat, September 14, 1973, 2nd Floor, Parking Garage, NW Washington, D.C.? Yea, us neither.
And in his weekly chat today, Howard Kurtz took all sorts of questions related to Watergate, Deep Throat and sourcing:
Question: Okay, here’s your theoretical question of the day: how long do you think it would have taken to complete the Watergate saga if Deep Throat could have just used an anonymous email address? Would have been a lot easier than moving that flower pot, or whatever.
Howard Kurtz: Yeah, but it would have ruined some of the best scenes in the movie if he was just Throat327@yahoo.com.
So there you have it: Please send Throat327@yahoo.com a get-well e-card RIGHT NOW.
