CQ Relaunches “CQ Politics”

From an internal notice to CQ staff, obtained by FishbowlDC:

    To the CQ Staff:

This is an exciting time for Congressional Quarterly as we take a first (giant) step into new territory with the re-launching of CQ Politics on Wednesday.

With a new design and a more powerful news package that combines our political reporting with CQ’s unrivalled coverage of Congress, we are expanding CQ’s editorial mission and its business to serve a national audience of politically engaged professionals and citizens with the kind of quality that is the trademark of CQ’s highly respected core news products.

It’s worth taking a moment on that last point. It is the success of that core business — supplying quality reporting and data to subscribers whose business is government — that has made possible this new initiative. In recreating CQ Politics, we are not forgetting what came before it — in fact, we take our main inspiration from it. I believe that CQ Politics will be a success if we can, through this free content offering, achieve the same blue-chip status among the general public for our politics and government information as CQ has done (and continues to do) with its current audience. And we will reach that goal while taking the utmost care to ensure that we do it in a way that safeguards our valuable core franchise.

It is exciting to contemplate the day when CQ has not only one, but two editorially strong and profitable businesses, and new paths to future growth.

Many of you know that I come from a company — NPR — that is very like CQ in the way that everyone here comes to work with a strong sense of CQ’s mission, from the executive level to all those who do the myriad daily tasks that add up to what CQ delivers each day. I feel that sense of mission when I come in, and it has also been apparent in the commitment and professionalism of the people from virtually all of CQ’s departments who have contributed to this new initiative. I learned my lesson long ago in sending out “kudo” notes that you always risk leaving someone out when you list names, so I’ll suffice it to say: Thanks to all of you who have embraced this with such enthusiasm and talent.

So, without further ado, take a look tomorrow. Let me know what you think. Whether you work directly for CQ Politics or not, your ideas will add to the creative energy we need to power CQ Politics to success.
