FishbowlDC Interview With Bloomberg TV’s Megan Hughes

Say hello to Megan Hughes. She’s a Washington Correspondent for Bloomberg Television and comes comes from Cleveland.

Hughes tells us she and her family were really into sports growing up. Her father was a coach and she and her two brothers played soccer.

Hughes’s has always had an interest in television; while in high school, she served as a host for a cable access show, “Fairview Forum,” that covered the in’s and out’s of the local school system. After earning a masters in journalism from Northwestern University, her first professional job was as an on-air reporter at ATV (Aruba Television). That began a decade-long career in television news, including five years covering Washington politics. She’s also covered stories overseas including Thailand after the tsunami and along the DMZ in South Korea.

Let’s begin.

If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be?

Zima

How often do you Google yourself?

Never! Now, Bing on the other hand…

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to an editor (or vice versa)?

I honestly can’t remember ever raising my voice or swearing at a boss. I guess I’ve had a pretty great group of bosses. Or I have a really bad memory.

Who is your favorite working journalist and why?

She’s a close personal friend, but I really admire Lisa DesJardins from CNN Radio. She’ll stay up all night combing through the minutiae of the budget or reading the Affordable Care Act in its entirety, and manages to balance Capitol Hill doggedness and the highest level of integrity. I’d also give an H/T to Mike Allen for his thoughtful aggregating at ungodly hours. It is appreciated as much as my first cup of coffee — that’s a tremendous amount.

Do you have a favorite word?

My first favorite word is onomatopoeia. My second would be sizzle or splat.

What word or phrase do you overuse?

“I saw that on Twitter hours ago.”

Who would you rather have dinner with – CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, ABC’s Diane Sawyer or NBC’s Tom Brokaw? Tell us why.

I’d have to go with Diane. She’s someone I’ve admired since I was hosting a cable access show in high school, and she’s been the definition of pioneer for women in this industry.

What is the most interesting conversation you’ve had while reporting a story and who was it with?

Wow, there have been a lot in 10 years of reporting. Most recently, I’d point to the conversations I had in advance of the Supreme Court hearing healthcare case. It was fascinating to see how it impacts different sectors. Cleveland Clinic’s CEO Toby Cosgrove really opened my eyes to the complexities of hospital budgeting. I had no idea how much money hospitals lose treating Medicaid patients.

What’s the name of your cell phone ring?

Timba.

It’s 3 a.m. and you get up to use the bathroom or get a drink of water. Do you check your BlackBerry?

Usually.

What word do you routinely misspell?

I misspell the last name of the Bloomberg colleague I must submit receipts to on an almost daily basis. It’s “Morisette.” Or “Morrissette.” To compensate for my frustration at an already tedious task, I take extra care to add a cheery “Thanks!!!” at the end of each email. Three exclamation points. Ron Morrisette probably thinks I’m a psychopath.

Find out what Hughes’ favorite chocolatey curse word is after the jump.

Why Washington D.C. Gossip Sucks

WaPo’s “UNreliable Source just keeps getting worse and worse. Just look at this latest piece of celebrity news. There are three stories and not one of them relates to Washington, D.C. We have a story about Will Smith slapping a reporter…. IN THE UKRAINE. We have a story about Lady Gaga pissing off her fans…. IN THAILAND. We have a story about Sharon Stone fighting her former nanny in court…. IN LOS ANGELES. Couldn’t they at least make an attempt to tie it back to D.C. in SOME way? Most of these stories don’t even take place on this continent. It’s just unapologetically writing Hollywood gossip that has no reason being in section.

The UNreliable Source is here to give you all the news that you hadn’t even realized that you didn’t care about.

Ask Piranhamous Anything

It’s Friday, which means it’s time for another installment of: “Ask Piranhamous Anything.” And we do mean anything. Send your queries to FishbowlDC@mediabistro.com. This isn’t an advice column — Piranhamous doesn’t know what the hell you should do with your life any more than you do — and worse, he doesn’t care. Try to keep your questions short — we want to keep this fun, simple, funny and insightful.

What do you think of what Hustler did with S.E. Cupp this week? Is Larry Flynt just a dirty, worn out, old pervert at this point?

Larry Flynt may have been dead from the waist down since 1978, but he was dead from the neck up since birth. I know the movie of his life, “The People vs Larry Flynt,” makes you think he’s some great First Amendment crusader who fought the government so we could all be perverts if we so choose. But what the movie didn’t highlight was the plaintiff in that case was not “The People” it was Jerry Falwell, so he was not fighting the government over censorship, he was fighting a preacher. Since then Flynt has been suffering for attention and fighting off bankruptcy. While he’s managed to fight off fiscal bankruptcy, creative and being relevant bankruptcy are a different story. This latest stunt is a losing attempt at the latter and a failure at the former.

What do you think ought to happen with David Shuster? Should Current TV just bring him into the fold already?

Don’t you mean “Emmy award winning broadcast journalist based in Washington, D.C.” David Shuster, as his Twitter bio says? Shuster winning an Emmy ranks right up there with Marisa Tomei winning an Oscar for My Cousin Vinnie in the annals of “Great Moments in Cheapening Once Prestigious Awards” history. His personality should fit in nicely with the band of rogues over at Current TV. Why shouldn’t he get a steady paycheck from Current before those checks start bouncing and the whole network goes under?

Do you think ABC’s Jake Tapper is the next Wolf Blitzer or the next George Stephanopoulos or neither?

No. I can’t imagine Jake Tapper embracing the beard look, so Wolf is out. As for George, Jake would have to work for a Democratic President then go into media and pretend to be an honest broker for that to happen. While Jake’s politics may be left of center, his professional integrity is not. He should have gotten the gig hosting “This Week” over George, but I think he’s too unpopular in the Obama White House for them to have ever signed off on that. So while the idea of Jake getting his own show is appealing, I’d prefer to keep him in the White House press room asking tough questions of the house’s occupant regardless of whether there’s an R or D after their name.

Money Crunch? WaPo Ladies Room Out of Soap

Everyone knows times are hard in the journalism industry but we sincerely hope it hasn’t gotten so bad over at WaPo that the publication is saving money by skimping on restroom supplies.

FBDC obtained an internal email from the newsroom yesterday indicating that at least one of its women’s restrooms was out of soap.

“[FYI], the ladies’ room on the fifth floor (near the 15th street elevators) is out of soap. i’m trying to see if someone can replenish supplies,” the email, from an anonymous source, said.

First WaPo was offering buyouts to newsroom employees. Now this?

“I cannot speak for the availability of hand soap in the women’s restrooms here,” WaPo‘s media reporter Erik Wemple told us. “In the restrooms that I use, hand-soap availability can be a touch spotty, but I hadn’t even given it a second thought till I received this e-mail. Stay on this!”

We will, Wemple. We will.

Al Jazeera English Grabs Major Award – Al Jazeera English was given the Grand Prize Award at The Robert F. Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism for its documentary film “Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark.” The movie focuses on the crackdown of protests in Bahrain in 2011. The film was written and directed by May Ying Welsh. The footage was obtained mostly through hidden camera and undercover reporting.

Local Worker Crowned “Commuter Idle” – WTOP has been on the hunt for the person with the worst commute in the region and they have announced their winner: Brenda Wells from Sparrow Point, MD. According to WTOP, “Wells travels nearly 100 miles, 5 hours a day from Sparrow’s Point to Washington, D.C., and back. Her day begins at 3 a.m. and her commute includes a 45-minute drive (complete with two tolls), a 50-minute train ride, two metro rides, a short walk, and a metro bus ride.” And you thought YOU had it bad by having to spend 20 extra minutes in rush hour. Wells wins $1,000 in gas money and a limousine ride for one of her future commutes.

Results of our FishPoll – Yesterday, we asked for your vote on whether or not conservative commentator, S.E. Cupp, had a case against Hustler for photo-shopping an inappropriate picture of her. Here are the results. The vast majority of you, 45.54%, say that yes, she does have a case. Meanwhile, 30.69% say that she is fair game because she is a public figure. Interestingly, 20.79 also weighed in saying that she didn’t have a case, “but she should make things as uncomfortable as possible for Hustler’s legal team.”

Journos: Want a Cool, Dirt Cheap Gift for Dad?

Looking for an unusual and dirt cheap Father’s Day gift?

Jake McGuire, an accomplished Washington photographer, may have the answer to your Father’s Day shopping woes. He’s giving away a minimum of 500 free copies of his most popular photograph, “Marine One” so Washingtonians can give their fathers what he considers to be a dramatic gift. “The economy is slow and most people can’t spend much money,” says McGuire, “so I thought I’d share the one photo that most dads go ‘wow’ over.”

The details on this contest sound easy. The fine print involves little more than clicking the “like” button on Facebook. If you work in a Congressional office and have to deal with a gift ban, a $10 donation is perfectly acceptable.

The photo, a straight-on view of the Presidential Helicopter flying down the National Mall. The print is a $40 value. He thinks the photo is particularly dynamic because the heat from the turbine engines of the Sikorski helicopter creates the mirage effect on the Capitol Dome. The photo has been “wildly popular” with White House and Capitol Hill staffers, lobbyists, Secret Service agents, DC interns, aviators and those who love great pictures of our Nation’s Capital.

Find out how to get a free copy for the June 17th holiday here.

Is Bill Clinton Involved in a Nigerian Money Scam?

The answer is no. But, the emails from the Obama campaign are certainly getting our attention in new and weird ways. Thursday afternoon, we received an email from “Bill Clinton” that had a subject line saying, “Meeting you.” Well, hot damn! It’s our lucky day. We get to meet Bill Clinton! NOT so fast. It’s an email trying to squeeze money out of potential donors. You see, Clinton is teaming up with POTUS for “An Evening with Two Presidents.” All you have to do is kick a little cash to the Obama campaign and you’re entered into a lottery to meet the two in NYC. (We’re less than shocked to see that POTUS didn’t include Jimmy Carter in this shindig.) I know that campaigns are constantly looking for inventive ways to raise funds, but maybe they can stop freaking me out so much with emails from famous people. It’s starting to come off as a scam. Just last week we got an email from “Sarah Jessica Parker” saying, “I’m hosting.” Hosting what? Saturday Night Live? The answer was no, she wasn’t hosting SNL, but rather another event for POTUS in NYC. Since Bill Clinton is so willing to help these days, we thought we’d help write the next version of the email.

From: Bill Clinton

Subject: I need your help

Dear Peter,
This message may be coming to you as a surprise but I need your help.Few days back we scheduled a fundraiser for President Barack Obama.Everything was going fine until last night when we got mugged on our way to the fundraiser and all cash and credit card were stolen off us.

I really need your financial assistance Please let me know if you can help us out?

You can wire the money to me through western union all you need is the Name on my passport and location below.

“Bubba”

Does S.E. Cupp Have a Case?

Publisher of Hustler Larry Flynt made news yesterday when his nudie mag ran a photo of conservative commentator S.E. Cupp with a photoshopped penis in her mouth.

Scott Baker, editor of The Blaze, which Cupp contributes to, told FBDC “it doesn’t sound like” she plans on suing. Flynt told The Daily Caller‘s Caroline May that he had every right to publish the photo, which came with a disclaimer stating it had been edited, as an expression of satire.

But is there a difference between parodying a public figure and photoshopping a penis in her mouth? Let us know in our Fish Poll. We’ll run the results tomorrow.

WaPo Adds Producer to Foreign Desk

WaPo is moving Olga Khazan to the foreign desk to be a producer. She’ll be responsible for daily digital presentation. She joined the publication in October 2011 to work on the Small Business section. As her name suggests, she speaks Russian fluently, which might help in navigating WaPo‘s website since nothing else seems to be working.

Congratulations to Olga!

The Hill Gets a New Publicity Team

If you’re a reporter covering the media you may have noticed new pitches flowing in for The Hill from Elizabeth Luke at High10 Media, a New York-based communications agency that also reps The Hollywood Reporter, Norman Lear‘s People for the American Way, NatGeo Network, Time Inc., Adweek, A&E Networks and Simon Cowell. The Hill has notoriously not had a publicist in a good while ever since Tricia Barba left the role in 2011 after about a year. Before Barba, they went years without a publicist. In January 2012 they brought on Megan McCourt as an editorial assistant to handle social media.

Now they’re giving High10 Media a try.

It’s hardly surprising that the publication would secure a New York-based firm considering The Hill‘s hands-on owner, Jimmy Finkelstein, resides in Manhattan. But what is a little confusing is that they’re not actually letting Luke autonomously speak to the media. When I asked her questions about whether she will serve in an actual role of spokeswoman, ironically she never replied, despite saying repeatedly in her emails, “Feel free to contact me with questions.” Editor Hugo Gurdon also did not reply to simple, basic questions we sent yesterday.

So who is actually speaking for The Hill? That would be High10 Media CEO Lisa Dallos, who said Tuesday morning that she would be handling my questions, but had to talk later because she was on an airplane. She explained quickly by email, “We were retained by The Hill to help promote its editorial and business interests — stories, events, special reports, and so forth. We work very closely with the client, in terms of what gets promoted. Elizabeth is part of the HIGH10 team working on the account.” On the subject of Luke, she said, “Elizabeth works with me, I run High10 Media, I oversee all the work with The Hill. I am the one to speak to.”

I told Dallos that Luke not being able to talk seems fishy. She replied, “Funny u think this is fishy. This would be a lot better if I could talk with you when I land.” She added, “It is very straightforward and not complicated. I am the CEO of company and lead work on all our clients Elizabeth as well as other members of the high 10 team work collaboratively to fulfill our clients needs.”

Luke seems qualified to answer questions and Dallos said I could call her or Luke anytime. Before joining High10 Media, Luke spent three years at Nielsen, most recently as a corporate communications analyst. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Communications. While it appears that Luke will not serve as an actual spokeswoman for the publication, Barba’s role also did not involve commenting on the record to reporters.

In a morning phone interview with Dallos, she said she’d be handling all questions related to the editorial and business sides of the publication. “Any of those questions feel free to call me,” she said. “I think the hope to have a coordinated communication effort under the guidance of Hugo and that we would be able to properly disseminate information to media on multiple subjects, whether it’s breaking news, evergreen and on announcements of whatever kind, both on the business side and the editorial side.”

So far, Luke typically sends out one email a day featuring a story they mark as “Breaking News.” Luke’s email intro on most pitches is as follows:

Good morning, I represent The Hill at High10 Media and am sharing this breaking story with you (link and text below) because it aligns with your beat and I thought you and your readers might be interested. If you decide to cover this story, please link to the article and credit to “The Hill.” Feel free to contact me with questions. Thank you!

But maybe don’t take that second to last line too seriously. That’s not exactly true.

BANG: The Daily Caller Gives Away Guns

To promote its “Guns and Gear” vertical, The Daily Caller is giving away one gun every week until Election Day in November. That’s 25 guns total.

The sound you hear is TWT‘s Emily Miller, who wrote a lengthy series called “Emily Gets Her Gun,” squealing through all of NW.

Winners of the giveaway will receive the FMK 9C1, an American-made high-capacity 9mm, according to a release. It comes in three colors and is engraved with the Bill of Rights.

“Like most Americans outside Washington, DC, New York City and most of our nation’s news rooms, large numbers of Daily Caller readers love guns. These people are already looking to our new Guns and Gear section for the latest product reviews and Second Amendment news,” said Neil Patel, Publisher and CEO.

Trigger happy readers can enter by simply visiting this landing page and filling out a form with some basic information.

Noteworthy: The release says “The Daily Caller is the only major U.S. news outlet with a dedicated section related to firearms and firearm-related issues.” So much for “Guns&Patriots” over at Human Events.

WaPo Mag Gets Another Editor

After WaPo names a new Pop Culture Editor Joe Heim will move into an editing role for WaPo Magazine. They describe him as a “wordsmith” who “loves to edit.” Heim joined the publication in 2000.

The memo on him, which isn’t half bad as memos go, remarks that “He wrote the memorable Bruce Springsteen profile and recently the story about public clocks for A1, a story he no doubt was inspired to do when he checked a public clock to see how late he was for work.”
