Kelly Won’t Face Rape Charges

After a two-week investigation, Manhattan prosecutors have concluded that no charges will be filed against Fox’s Greg Kelly, formerly a White House Correspondent for FNC. Various New York outlets first began reporting the news last night. It appears DNAInfo.com, AP, and the NYT all began reporting the news at the same time. A woman recently came forward and made allegations to authorities that Kelly had sexually assaulted her while they were on a date. Kelly is a host on “Good Day New York,” which airs on the Fox affiliate WNYW-TV.

He sent out the following statement in light of the news:

“I am thankful that the investigation established what I’ve known all along, that I am innocent of the allegations that were waged against me. I am so blessed to have a wonderful family and friends whose support for me never wavered. My lawyer Andrew Lankler and advisor Ken Sunshine were invaluable during this process. Thank you to the thousands of ‘Good Day New York’ viewers who expressed positive support through social media. And I am grateful to everyone at FOX 5, especially Rosanna Scotto, my co-host. I will always remember her kindness, and I look forward to soon resuming my post on ‘Good Day New York’ next to her.”

Fleming Falls for Onion Article

Someone needs to explain parody to Rep. John Fleming (R-La.). A recent status update on the Congressman’s Facebook page links to a story about how Planned Parenthood is building an “$8 billion Abortionplex.” A story that was published by… The Onion. The website Literally Unbelievable posted a screen shot of the link. They are devoted to publishing screenshots of people who mistakenly believe that Onion articles are the real deal. Fleming has since taken the link down from his timeline.

It took us six calls to Fleming’s office to realize a reply was probably going to be a long shot. When it sunk in that they were never going to call us back, we decided to try harder. On our first call, we were greeted by a slow-witted intern who told us that he didn’t know WHO had posted the Facebook article on Fleming’s profile. When we asked when they realized it was a fake, he again answered “I don’t know.” Then, we suggested, if this was indeed a fake story, where might we be able to find “a more reputable abortionplex in the area?” Again he replied, “I don’t know.”

Finally, we spoke to Doug Sachtleben, a real live spokesman for Fleming. He tells FishbowlDC that the article was ”inadvertently posted” and taken down “within hours.”

The White House Soup of the Day, as reported by MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown” is…

Wendy Wednesday

In it, she pushes the gals into position and makes her best C.H.U.D.* face for the camera. Looking good, Wendy!

As we say around FishbowlDC constantly, if it’s Wednesday, it’s Wendy Wednesday.

*C.H.U.D. is a 1984 American horror film produced by Andrew Bonime and directed by Douglas Cheek. C.H.U.D. is an acronym for “Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller”.

CPAC has just the event for you. The schedule for the largest annual gathering of conservatives includes a special forum this year for right-wing singles.

Guiding them through daring dating waters will be dating coach Wayne Elise, pictured at right, shirtless and holding a pair of tiny scissors. He has been hailed a pick-up artist and an escape artist (this doesn’t scare us at all). “Learn everything from how to avoid scaring away your own personal Dagny Taggart in the first five minutes of the conversation, to whether Tea Partiers and Occupiers can share something more than a dislike for bailouts,” the description for the event says. For the uniformed, Taggart is the protagonist in Ayn Rand‘s Atlas Shrugged.

The event will be held Thursday, Feb. 9 in the McKinley room at the Marriott.

CNN Analyst Roland Martin has been suspended for the “time being” after making perceived homophobic comments on Twitter on Super Bowl Sunday regarding a David Beckham underwear ad.

“Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated.
Lunch is Served: AFL-CIO Speechwriter Offers Coworkers Goose Shot by Union Prez

Just before noon today Robert Struckman, editorial and speech writer for the AFL-CIO, sent an email to the public affairs department about a free goose lunch.

“Hey all, I brought smoked wild goose to the office today,” the email said. Struckman went on to explain how the goose had been prepped. “It was smoked over an apple wood fire by none other than me. It’s in the usual spot. Enjoy.”

Most shocking: Struckman explained that the goose in question had been killed by “none other” than the union network’s president Richard Trumka.

We emailed Struckman to find out about “the usual spot.” He said it’s “right in front of Donna Jablonski‘s office on the fifth floor.” Jablonski is ALF CIO’s deputy director of public affairs for publications.

Struckman told us the goose was “delicious” and quickly devoured.

Ana’s Ex Spills About Break-Up

The Guardian‘s Ana Marie Cox may be keeping herself relatively low-key in Texas, but her ex-husband Chris Lehman let some details slip about how he’s coping after the divorce. Lehman, who recently left Yahoo! News and is a longtime editor at Bookforum and contributor to In These Times, gave an interview to the literary culture blog Full Stop this week about his book, Rich People Things. In the interview, he opens up slightly to Michael Schapira about his recent breakup. Schapira refers to the book as an “act of public therapy.”

Take a look…

You’re in a band called The Charm Offensive. Is this another side of your work as a social critic? “I was very much influenced by punk rock and politically-minded bands like the Minutemen. My lead guitarist used to be in Ian MacKaye’s first band, Teen Idol. I like Fugazi, but I’m not of the D.C. hardcore scene, by any means. My stuff is more poppy. It is the only coherent ambition I ever formed in my young adulthood that has stayed with me. Though becoming a rock star never panned out, I keep going at it. But I write a lot of break-up songs, so it’s not economic.”

Breitbart in D.C. to Tout American Values Kids Books

Tonight Big Journalism’s Andrew Breitbart is in town to promote American values-themed digital books for children. He’ll host a “meet and greet” for authors Allen Covert and Dan Kessler of Cherry Tree Media, a Hollywood-based digital publishing company, at his abode on Capitol Hill. At the gathering, Covert and Kessler will launch “American Stories for America’s Kids.”

Cherry Tree promises to deliver “patriotic and morally instructive children’s entertainment.” They use family-friendly characters to tell stories oozing with values. Take Tex the T. Rex. He was born in a red, white and blue egg on the Fourth of July. That’s realistic enough — a green animal resembling a cross between a bunny and a dinosaur is hatched from a tri-colored egg. Rex travels the country with his dog, the originally-named Spot, to learn why the United States is so special. In Special Hops, Commander Jack Rabbit, Lieutenant Cashmere and Cadet Cottontail (a brave and loyal trio, especially Lt. Cashmere, our personal favorite) protect the farm and keep the animals living in freedom.

Covert says value-themed books are sorely needed. As an actor, writer, producer, and frequent collaborator in films with Adam Sandler, he stated, “Unfortunately, many talented people in Hollywood find their values and politics do not reflect the content they create, and many movie themes are in direct contrast with over half of today’s American families. This is especially reflected in children’s entertainment where no brand currently promotes a strong patriotic, pro-family or American values message.”

Kessler agrees with Covert wholeheartedly…

Separated at Birth: Examiner’s Philip Klein

This morning we’re pairing Examiner’s Philip Klein with a slightly younger version of Counselor to Treasury Sec. Tim Geithner, Gene Sperling, and actor Jim Nabors who played Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show. We have another contender from a reader…it’s Henry Czerny from “Clear and Present Danger.”

WaPo Offers Buyouts

WaPo is offering voluntary buyouts to “some newsroom employees.” It isn’t intended for “every department” or every individual,” stresses Exec. Editor Marcus Brauchli in a morning memo. “Our objective is a limited staff reduction that won’t affect the quality, ambition or authority of our journalism. We believe this is possible, given the changes in how we work and the great successes we have had building our digital readership lately.”

Those employees who are offered the deal have 45 days to decide.

Interesting line from Brauchli: “We may turn down some volunteers if we feel their departure would impair our journalism. That said, it is important that we achieve real savings.”

Best example of corporate speak: “The exact details of the buyout, technically a voluntary Separation Incentive Program, will come later, after the company talks to the Guild about its proposed terms.”

Today at WaPo brass will hold two “Town Hall” meetings — one at 11 a.m., another at 4:30 p.m. to answer questions.

See the memo…

Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day — To the Right

Breaking bread with terrorists

“At an extravagant penthouse apartment in downtown Chicago, The Daily Caller dined with former terrorists Sunday night.” — The lede to The Daily Caller‘s Jamie Weinstein‘s story on Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson‘s dinner with former Weather Underground terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn. The Daily Caller posse included Carlson, Weinstein, Big Journalism Founder Andrew Breitbart, a Daily Caller contest winner (a female who, so far, remains anonymous) Carlson’s brother, Buckley, and Weekly Standard senior writer Matt Labash. Read the story here. Carlson also went on WMAL’s “Morning Majority”: “At one point Bernadine compared the United States to Nazi Germany because of course she did! … I am appalled by them, but she is smooth,” he said. Best line: “I’m sure I somehow caught Syphilis from that dinner.” Listen to the full interview here.

A question posed to Breitbart online: “What’s your favorite name you’ve been called on Twitter?” He replied, “‘Fat Reich Wing Fascist Racist Faggot’ is synthesis of the online leftist argument against me. Variations on that theme.”

Loesch to Washington for CPAC

“Looking forward to #CPAC12. This year I vow not to return with the plague.” — CNN Contributor and Big Journalism Editor Dana Loesch.

Red State and CNN’s Erick Erickson goes on a Fox News bender: “I have a fair number of haters across parties. I’m fair and balanced in that regard. Heh.”

Bio of the Day — Stephen Hayes: “I am not the guy who writes for the Daily Standard. So please stop sending me tea party stuff. I follow a variety of issues mostly nuclear or missile related.” (As D.C. journos know, Stephen Hayes writes for that right wing mag more commonly known as The Weekly Standard.)

Scribe is disgusted by coffee

“I don’t drink coffee, never have. I’ve had most of 2 cups in my life, couldn’t finish them & sips of all sorts of doctored versions. #Gross” — Townhall columnist and radio host Derek Hunter. Explaining further, he adds, “Coffee is warm, dirty water that you can’t make taste good. No matter what you add to it, the underlying flavor is warm, dirty water.” On a completely different note, Politico media blogger Dylan Byers tweets a story he wrote on a “Pew survey finds more media bias.” To which Hunter cracks, “Must’ve read your shit.” (Sidenote: Byers was scheduled to go on the Bill Press radio program this morning. He showed up FINALLY, but was extremely tardy. Stay tuned…we’ll inquire and see if he has any decent excuses. UPDATE: Byers overslept. Seriously, VandeHarris let you get Zzzzz’s? UPDATE 2: He had an iced coffee in tow, which means he was late and actually STOPPED for it.)

If Mattera were judge…

“If what this teacher is accused of is true, then he should be hung from his balls.” — Human Events‘ Jason Mattera in regards to the LA teacher who was accused of spoon-feeding his semen to blindfolded students.

A journo’s latest addiction: hot chocolate

“Ok, given the slow trickle of results I think I have a few minutes to get some hot chocolate at 7-11. My latest addiction.” — The Examiner‘s Philip Klein.

Mikki Taylor: FLOTUS Brings ‘Sophistication’ to American Style

In her new book Commander in Chic, Essence editor-at-large Mikki Taylor doles out fashion and beauty tips for the everyday woman based on examples from Michelle Obama.

“I love her clear cut assurance, the way she owns her style from within,” she explained in our Media Beat interview.

And one thing FLOTUS has done, according to Taylor, is inject a much needed sophistication into America’s dress code. Casual Fridays? No, thank you, she says.

“I think that we’re a little too relaxed. I think a relaxed nation creates other kinds of flexibilities that shouldn’t exist. Let’s treat each other with the respect and the honor that we are due, and so the subliminal things play into that. If we’re coming to work in sneakers, if we’re coming to work in ripped jeans and plaid shirts, who are we representing?”
