Former Verizon Washington D.C. President Marie Johns Confirmed as U.S. Small Business Administration Deputy Administrator


Marie C. Johns, the former President of Verizon Washington, D.C. is the new Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Nominated by President Obama, Johns’ appointment to the position was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate earlier today.


The SBA has provided counseling and assistance to small businesses nationwide since 1953. As the agency’s second-ranking official Johns will be in charge of management, policy development and program supervision.

“I am excited to join Administrator Mills and the entire SBA team to serve the interests of small businesses across this country. The SBA mission is fundamental to the economic strength of our nation; that is, give small businesses the support they need to grow and create jobs,” Johns said in a press release.

Johns has served as chair of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Greater Washington and Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science. She also founded the Washington, D.C. Technology Council and the Students Educated for Economic Development Success program (SEEDS), which trained over 200 high school dropouts for placement in entry-level positions in information technology.

A 21-year veteran of the telecommunications industry, Johns retired from Verizon Washington, D.C. in 2004.
