Hot Congress-on-Gannon Action
For those of you looking for something sexy and (small ‘d’) democratic to occupy yourself at work this morning (and, really, who isn’t?), word from Capitol Hill that Congress will be taking up Jeff Gannon this morning.
The House Judiciary Committee is going to be meeting to vote on a resolution calling for the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security to answer a series of outstanding quesstions about Gannon and his access to the White House. Never one to miss a chance for publicity, the committee will be webcasting the hot resolution mark-up and eventual vote LIVE starting at 10 a.m. ET. Depending on whether John Conyers has decided to wear pants today, it might even be a work-safe webcast.
“The American public deserves the full truth as to who at the White House paved the way for Mr. Guckert to have repeated and staged access to the President,” Conyers’ office said last night. That rhetoric should definitely work because the whole ‘deserves the full truth’ argument has proved so compelling with Iraq, Abu Ghraib, WMDs, Medicaid, the federal budget, and Social Security.
On a related note, today also marks the final day of a FOIA request from Conyers and Louise Slaughter’s office asking the White House for all documents relating to Gannon’s credentials. Anyone want to take a bet on whether they should expect a thick envelope from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue today?
