More Expresses To Litter Metro
In a sign of we’re-not-sure-what-but-it-certainly-somehow- means-a-heatening-up-of-the-newspaper-wars-in-Washington, the Post’s free commuter paper, the Express, is set to up its daily print run just six weeks after the launch of the free upscale tabloid the D.C. Examiner.
The 14 percent increase, from 175,000 to 200,000 copies, marks the third time the Express has increased its distribution since the paper’s August 2003 launch. The extra copies will not be specifically targeted to any part of the region. The last increase came in July when the daily distribution went from 150,000 to 175,000.
According to Sandy Yeilding, the Express’ marketing director, the increase is unrelated to the Examiner’s launch. “We have not identified a connection between the launch of the Examiner and a change in the demand for Express,” she told Fishbowl. “Express generally increases its distribution whenever we determine that there is ample demand for additional copies in the marketplace.”
The Examiner said yesterday that it plans to maintain its current print run, about 260,000, for the foreseeable future.
