Mother Jones Begs Readers to “Stop the Lies” and Donate Dough

cash1.jpg

This just in. It’s a letter some Mothers Jones readers received today in a major plea for financial help from Editors Clara Jeffery and Monika Bauerlein.

The email’s subject line is: Fight the “fact-free” politics of Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck

Appropriate? Over the top? Let us know what you think by writing us at mediabistro@fishbowldc.com or fishbowlbetsy@gmail.com. (We’ve highlighted some of the more dramatic passages).

Dear friend,

No, it’s not just you. It’s becoming clear to everyone that extremists have hijacked our national political discourse-and the media.

Cable news hosts comparing Obama to Hitler…Tea Partiers threatening lawmakers’ lives…Members of Congress encouraging citizens to get “armed and dangerous.”

It’s getting crazy out there. And with the declining quality of mainstream journalism, most news outlets unquestioningly amplify this fear-mongering.

But you can help stop it. We’re writing today to ask you to support Mother Jones, the independent, nonprofit news outlet that fearlessly reports the truth and stands up to the blustering bullies.

We’ll be honest: No single organization can stamp out all the lies. But we can put a huge dent in them with well-reported, triple-checked facts. And our “reality based” journalism is known for its accuracy, so our stories have a big impact in the wider media.

We need your support right now because the noise machine is getting louder by the day. Lies are free to fabricate. But it costs money to correct them with solid reporting. So we’re asking for your help. We don’t ask you often, but we need to raise $25,000 this month to pay for critical reporting, and we could really use your support.

Even a small donation makes a big difference: Your $5 or $10 will put reporters in the field. It will keep the lights on at our Washington, DC, bureau. It will train the future BS-busting journalists in our internship program.

Please help us out. Every little bit helps, and it just takes a minute to donate via credit card or PayPal. Won’t you join your fellow readers in making a difference today? We depend on you.

Sincerely,

Clara Jeffery and Monika Bauerlein
Editors in chief
