NYT DC Bureau Shake-Up In The Works
NYO’s Media Mob is reporting that a shake-up is underway this week in the NYT’s beleagured Washington bureau: “Washington editor Kate Phillips, the number-two editor in the bureau, left the position Tuesday, according to a source in the bureau familiar with the matter. Bureau chief Phil Taubman is scheduled to hold a brown-bag lunch meeting today to address the staff about Phillips’ departure.”
As the NYO reports (and has been obvious to anyone reading both papers recently), the Times seems to have been playing a lot of catch-up recently with the Washington Post. Plus, the loss of Todd S. Purdum certainly couldn’t have helped matters–or morale. [The feeling that the Post is doing real well is one of the factors that led to the NYT's attempted newsroom raid this summer, which fell short when they failed to grab such luminaries as Mark Leibovich.]
“If the Washington bureau has to cite the Washington Post one more time, Phil Taubman’s head is going to explode,” one NYTer said.
