photo

Newbies Get Warned About Self Importance

Avoid sleeping around. Don’t forget your family exists.

These were some of the bolder messages that came out of a reception hosted by The Hill last night at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel for new members of Congress and their soon to be pissed off spouses who rarely see them, and when they do, they’ll be surrounded by 20-something know-it-all geekoids in suits and ties who don’t let them in on the office schedule.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz urged new members and their spouses to “avoid temptations” that lurk in the nation’s capital. Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) reminded them to take time for their family. Wasserman Schultz didn’t elaborate on specific “temptations” new members of Congress ought to avoid, but her warning triggered knowing laughs. Wasserman smartly instructed them to surround themselves with at least one person who will tell you that, “You’re not so great.”

Rep. Michele Bachmann‘s (R-Minn.) speech was similar to the rest. She advised newbies to bring someone from your home district to work with them on Capitol Hill. Bachmann also appeared to defy Wasserman’s advice on not being self-centered, noting she was one of only 13 House Republicans who won in 2006.

Spotted in the crowd: Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and his wife, Elizabeth, Chuck Conconi of Qorvis Communications, C-SPAN’s Bill Scanlan and Howard Mortman. Christina Robbins and Stephanie Livingston of Fox News and The Hill’s Russell Berman, Molly Hooper and Mike O’Brien.

Beer and wine were served along with the usual reception fare of crab cakes and other finger foods.
