CNN’s Michelle Kosinski Asks Josh Earnest for Clarification on White House Pay Gap

Screen Shot 2014-07-03 at 02.07.36Since the 2014 report to Congress on White House staff salaries and titles was published online, media have reported on it through a variety of lenses including top employee salaries and position-specific salaries such as the chief calligrapher and stenographer. On Wednesday, CNN White House correspondent Michelle Kosinski asked White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest about the report and whether it demonstrates the White House’s stance on the gender pay gap.

“You can look at whether individuals who hold the same title make the same salary,” said Earnest. “That’s certainly the case at the White House – there are a variety of examples of this. In response to Kosinski’s initial comment that “It keeps coming up repeatedly that the metric the White House cites for there being a gap nationwide is also there at the White House,” the newly minted White House Press Secretary interrupted her to point out that nationally, women compared to men make 77 cents on the dollar and at the White House, that figure is 88 cents on the dollar.
