From WaPo’s Howard Kurtz: The New York Times Co. said last night that it is notifying federal authorities of its plans to shut down the Boston Globe. After down-to-the-wire negotiations did not produce millions of dollars in union concessions, the Times Co. said that it will file a required 60-day notice of the planned shutdown. Read on here.

NYT: The Globe‘s union put out a statement saying it had made a proposal that exceeded management’s demands.

WSJ checks in with Warren Buffet on the future of the newspaper business. “For most newspapers in the United states, we would not buy them at any price,” he said in response to a question about whether he would consider investing in newspapers. “They have the possibility of going to just unending losses.”

NYT reports NBC has plans to expand SNL’s Weekend Update will expand with half hour specials during prime-time, as well as the usual segments in Saturday Night Live.
