Hot Topic: Off-Exchange Enrollees

Today is the last official day to sign up for Obamacare via Healthcare.gov and the state exchanges -but it’ll still be a while before we know how many people actually enrolled. Meanwhile, there will be plenty of conjecture about the success and/or failure of the exchanges. But some journos are  buzzing about the healthcare shoppers who are staying off the exchanges altogether. These young procrastinators avoided the flawed government websites and signed up directly with their insurers over the past few weeks. Though they will still benefit from the healthcare law’s new provisions, they won’t be counted when Obamacare enrollments are finally tallied:

6 WaPo Hires and Promotions in 36 Hours

The Washington Post has announced 6 new hires and promotions over the last day and a half. The shuffling of reporting talent comes a little less than a month after Executive Editor Marty Baron announced the paper would be making “impressive investments” in the paper’s online resources and expanding its Sunday magazine. The pace of hiring at the paper, which was already brisk, has increased even more since then.

Here’s a rundown of the newest additions and adjustments to the WaPo family:

Jason Millman is joining Wonkblog from Politico. He has also worked at Thompson Publishing Group and The Hill, and will be covering healthcare.

Emily Badger is also joining Wonkblog. Badger, a former WaPo Sports intern-turned-freelance-writer,  was most recently at The Atlantic Cities blog. She will be covering urban policy.

Monica Hesse,  a writer for the Style section and the author of two young adult books, will become an enterprise reporter at the National desk.

Lenny Bernstein will be launching a new health and wellness blog. He previously wrote a fitness column and worked as an editor on the National, Local and Sports desks.

Colby Itkowitz is joining WaPo to help Al Kamen report and write In the Loop. She was most recently Washington correspondent for The Morning Call of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

And Alyssa Rosenberg will be joining the Opinions section as a pop culture blogger. She joins The Post from ThinkProgress.org, where she has been the Features Editor and has her own blog on culture.

Politico Steals Top NJ Health Reporter

The Hill’s New Hires

An internal memo from The Hill‘s Editor Hugo Gurdon catches us up on three new male hires at the paper: Erik Wasson, Peter Schroeder and Jason Millman.

The memo:

I wanted to let you know about three new reporters who will be arriving in the newsroom this month.

Erik Wasson will cover budget and appropriations for the paper and will also contribute to the On The Money blog. He is currently at Inside US Trade, and before that worked at Cambodia Daily.

Peter Schroeder, currently at The Bond Buyer, will report for The Hill on finance, taxes and corporate governance. Like Erik he will write for the newspaper and online and will contribute regularly to On The Money.

Jason Millman is coming over from the Thompson Publishing Group to cover health policy on the Healthwatch blog and in the paper. He has covered health policy extensively at Thompson, and previously worked for the Harford Business Group.

All three reporters will enhance the range and depth of our excellent reporting team, and I am sure you will welcome them as enthusiastically as I will.

Thanks, Hugo
