NJ Bids Farewell to Posner With Obit

NJ‘s Mike Magner writes an obituary today on veteran Hill reporter Mike Posner, who died last week of leukemia. He was 79.  Posner most recently worked for CongressDaily which became National Journal Daily last year.

Magner affectionately writes that “Poz” was “known as much for his crumpled clothes as much as for his good humor and relentless reporting skills…” and quotes former colleagues such as ex-CongressDaily Editor Lou Peck and George Wilson, both of whom knew Posner well.

Note: Memorial contributions may be sent to Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation, 5255 Loughboro Rd. N.W., Washington, D.C., 20016.

Veteran Hill Reporter Dies of Leukemia

Veteran Capitol Hill reporter Mike Posner has died. He worked for Congress Daily, LEGI-SLATE News Service, UPI and Reuters. The news was announced this morning by Congress Daily HR Director Jeff Frederick:

“Good morning, I’m sending this note with some sad news.  Michael Posner, a former employee who worked at Congress Daily for 11 plus years, passed away on Friday.  His wife, Andrea, called this morning.  There will be a memorial service, but the details are still pending.  Andrea said she would call me once the details have been finalized.  Andrea seems to be holding up pretty well, but please keep her in your thoughts during this difficult time.”

More on Posner, also known as “Poz” by friends and colleagues: From a reader: “He battled bravely against leukemia. He took the buyout National Journal offered employees late last spring. He joined National Journal Group in 1999 when the company offered jobs to the entire editorial staff of the LEGI-SLATE News Service shortly after the Washington Post Company decided to shut down the online congressional news operation in a deal struck between the Post and Congressional Quarterly.”

Five Journos Bid Farewell in Senate Press Gallery

The Senate Press Gallery held a small soiree Wednesday afternoon for five journalists who are retiring (or who took bailouts).

A white sheet cake was decorated with their names on it and two garbage cans full of ice and beers were part of the offerings. Those being celebrated include: Congress Daily’s Dave Hess, Lou Peck, Keith White, Mike Posner, and Susan Milligan of The Boston Globe, who, reports HuffPost Hill, is going on sabbatical.

Noted one scribe who attended noticed that the back table in the gallery had been piled with tasty food and drinks all day in prep for the party.
