Paula Abdul Leaves Party After 10 Minutes

Good champagne. Upscale hors d’ oeuvres. Mannequins in the basement. A non-D.C. type of crowd and atmosphere where reporters won’t go all paparazzi on you. What more could singer Paula Abdul have wanted?

Tough to say. But Abdul left last night’s V magazine party in the bowels of Washington’s Kalorama neighborhood just 10 minutes after the party started. A petite woman dressed in black from head to toe, Abdul came, barely looked up and left so fast that even the sparse early crowd barely noticed she was there. That is, until she was gone.

In her defense, Abdul was on fairly vigorous party schedule. Before the V party, she attended The Creative Coalition’s “Night Before Dinner” at Mari Vanna DC.

Sponsored by Veuve Clicquot and Belvedere Vodka, guests at the V party enjoyed the alcohol and fare as well as peering into the indoor swimming pool inside the quirky home of D.C. Architect Arthur Keyes. Some partygoers thought it resembled “Brady Bunch” house. Later in the evening singer John Legend showed up with an attractive woman in a long red dress.

Throughout the evening a procession of important looking people walked in. “Who is that woman in the red dress?” a male partygoer asked about a different woman in a different red dress. An extremely thin woman in black lace was also the subject of many side conversations.

Spotted in the crowd: People‘s Sandra Sobieraj Westfall, Andrei Greenawalt from the White House Chief of Staff’s office, Politico‘s Kevin Cirilli, The Hill‘s Alexandra Jaffe, Mila Beca from Saks Jandel, The Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove, BuzzFeed‘s Hunter Schwarz, David Shuster’s producer, Daniel Marans, D.C. publicist running the party, Dannia Hakki, SKDKnickerbocker’s Jill Zuckman.

Enchanted, Surprised, Troubled and Humbled at Time & People

Larry Hackett and Sandra Sobieraj Westfall of People Magazine and Time Magazine’s Richard Stengel and Michael Duffy kicked off the WHCA Dinner weekend with a star-studded cocktail at the Hotel St. Regis. Taking a cue from our pal Jeff Zeleny, we’ve decided to summarize the fete in a four-part format.

We were enchanted by Meghan McCain. The Senator’s daughter was warm, friendly and looking fierce…

Surprised to see Jeff Zeleny (our inspiration). We caught up with the NYT WH correspondent for a few laughs and a drink…

Troubled by Kevin Bacon‘s behavior. When the skinny star wasn’t rejecting requests for his picture, he was leaning against the bar in his best ‘too cool for school’ manner…

Humbled by Mark Whitaker and Alexis Gelber. The dynamic duo never ceases to amaze us with their charm, smarts and approachable demeanor…

We also ran into Greta Van Susteren, Chris Matthews, Norah O’Donnell, Savannah Guthrie, Patrick Gavin, Wolf Blitzer, Michael Calderone, Mike Allen, Arianna Huffington and Amy Argetsinger.

Thanks to Politico’s Patrick Gavin who snagged a few minutes with Meghan McCain:

A Dinner For Judith

mediajudy.jpgBloomberg’s P.R. Expert (and White House Correspondents’ Association dinner After Party hostess) Judith Czelusniak literally and barely blew into town on the tail of yesterday’s nasty thunderstorm for meetings with the producers of Bloomberg TV’s Money and Politics (which had Barney Frank and the Rob Portman on last night and has previously had Rudy Giuliani, Lamar Alexander, and Hillary Clinton on…but never Mike Bloomberg?!?)

More important, Czelusniak almost missed an uber-vibrant dinner in her honor at the Palm….including usual suspects and friends Mike Allen, Hope and David Bass, Tim Burger, Rebecca Christie, Tucker Carlson, Shridar Pappu, Patrick Gavin, Chris Berry, Edie Emery, Anne Schroeder, Sandra Sobieraj Westfall, Amy Argetsinger, Garrett Graff (it’s his birthday today…we swear the to-be author is still like 22 or something…)John McCaslin, Anne Schroeder and Janet Donovan.

Attendance being high, the Palm’s largest roundtop was expanded throughout the evening with tables ripped from the wall to create the soon to be famous and infinitely expandable “Banjo Formation”.

Sorry we don’t have pictures.

Is The People Magazine Bureau Gone?

Yes and no.

You’ll notice that in the latest issue of People (what, you don’t subscribe?!?), the masthead lists a Washington bureau, headed by Sandra Sobieraj Westfall. She was recently named a staff writer and will be People’s primary point person in Washington, despite the closings announced earlier.
