Century of Political Photographs on Display at the W

Snapped_wdcAs if there weren’t enough White House Correspondents’ Dinner-related happenings this week, the White House News Photographers Association, FotoDC, Brightest Young Things and the W present “SNAPPED,” an exhibit of the best political photographs from 1900 to present. But luckily for you, there’s no rush. The exhibit – which opens today – is on display through May 20.

The works to be featured include those of Brooks Kraft, 2013 Corbis International Photographer of the Year; New York Times photog George TamesChip Somodevilla, winner of the 2007 WHNPA Political Photo of The Year; Arnie Sachs, who photographed eleven presidents; AP photog Carolyn Kaster; and Ron Edmonds, winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize in Spot News Photography.

The collection of 200 photographs will be introduced tonight from 6 – 8 pm in the lobby of the W (515 15th St. NW) at an event hosted by Theo Adamstein, Kristin Guiter, Philippa Hughes, Svetlana Legetic, Sheldon Scott, and Kate Warren.

MTV’s Whitney Port Talks Michelle Obama & House of Cards Style

PortJust in time for White House Correspondents Weekend, Blo Blow Dry Bar (2126 P St. NW) has opened blocks from the Washington Hilton where the dinner takes place. And on Friday, former MTV reality star and fashion designer Whitney Port hosted its launch event with owner Maha Sharma.

What is Blo Blow Dry Bar? We asked ourselves the same question! Blo is North America’s original (and first!) blow dry bar. Think hair salon minus the scissors and dye, leaving you with a wash, dry, and style. Blo Dupont is the chain’s 38th location, including Miami, Austin, Russia, and the Philippines.

Naturally, FishbowlDC was in attendance, and we caught up with Port and Sharma on Michelle Obama’s fashion, looking your best on television, and what we can expect style-wise at this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner.

On House of Cards style…

Whitney Port: “Robin Wright’s character is very sophisticated and chic and I think she does amazing on that show.”

On Michelle Obama’s style…

WP: “I think she always looks so beautiful and sophisticated. I think she dresses herself appropriately for her figure and status…She always looks amazing.”

TNR’s Art and Literary Characters

TNR‘s Literary Editor Leon Wieseltier’s ears must have been burning up last night. Well before he arrived to The Phillips Collection to give a talk on a John Constable oil painting, colleagues gabbed about what a character he is – a few mentioned, for example, his penchant for blasting music at the office. One day it’s Rihanna, the next it’s opera.

Leon doesn’t disappoint. He shows up and people magnetically gravitate toward him. Or was it his hair? He has a spectacular head of shoulder-length, silky, white-gold fluff that makes him a stand-out in any crowd, but especially this well-coiffed, stylish mix.

“I don’t want that on WikiLeaks,” he deadpanned after I snapped his picture.

Later during the talk: “It’s very hard to peel back the familiarity of the work,” he tells a rapt audience stuck on his every word. “It’s a spiritual exercise. When you can do it, great things happen.”

The talk was part of TNR’s co-hosted After 5 dim sum party at The Phillips Collection. Chinatown’s Ping Pong catered the delectable cuisine with shrimp toast among its offerings. Also there to give a talk was the magazine’s Art Critic Jed Perl.

Perl, in from Manhattan, in a tailored brown corduroy blazer and skinny pants, is no slouch alongside Wieseltier. He’s thankfully game to dissect The Devil Wears Prada. He wrote for Vogue in the 80s and reminisced with FishbowlDC about what it was like to be Anna Wintour‘s Art Editor. “She was easy to work with,” he said, explaining she could be shy, not snobby. Of Meryl Streep’s character in the movie, he says, “She doesn’t just play icy bitch. It’s more complex than that.” And so is Wintour. He said she understood him perfectly, is “incredibly smart” and knew his ideal place within the publication. He surmised, “I think she gets a bum rap because she’s a woman. I have a deep respect for her.”
