After we posted the results of the Erdos & Morgan study declaring “Roll Call’s Continued Market Dominance,” we received a few questions from readers about the study’s methodology.
Roll Call got back to us and explained what it means to be a “sponsor” of the study.
Now Erdos & Morgan has written to answer a few more questions, which we’ll reprint here…
What is the sample size? “Congressional branch – 100 in Congress, 100 chief legislative aides and 100 staff directors received questionnaires which is a total of 300. Completed interviews were obtained from 137 individuals. The Executive branch – 300 individuals received questionnaires. A total of 186 usable questionnaires were returned. State, City and County Gov’t. – Mailed out 300 questionnaires and 175 returned questionnaires. Private Sector – six fields (Finance & Industry, Business, Communications & Media, Education, Law, Healthcare and Science) each field was sent 300 questionnaires for a total of 1,800 and 1,135 individuals responded. Associations – 300 mailed a question and 143 completed questionnaires were returned. The above equates to a total 3,000 sample size.”
Are people paid? The option of donating $5.00 to a listed charity was offered.

Erdos & Morgan maintains that being a sponsor only allows one to use the data but that the studies are independently conducted by Erdos & Morgan. No one hires E & M to conduct this survey.
