WaPo‘s Berlin Bureau Chief Comes Home

After five years as the Berlin bureau chief for WaPo, Craig Whitlock will return to Washington. Cameron Barr and Kevin Merida announced Whitlock’s new role as a Defense correspondent for National.

Memo after the jump…

Whitlock to National

We’re delighted to announce that Craig Whitlock will join the National staff as Defense correspondent. Craig will work alongside Greg Jaffe and other National Security reporters to chronicle America’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the strains these conflicts impose on the U.S. military.

Craig comes to this position with a wealth of experience covering the attempts of the United States and other countries to combat al-Qaeda and allied groups. Dispatched to Berlin as bureau chief in May 2004, Craig never found Osama bin Laden, but last year he came close to apprehending a terrorism suspect in Yemen with a $5 million U.S. bounty on his head. The guy stepped on Craig’s foot, then declined to comment and scampered off. During his 5-plus years in Berlin, Craig reported from more than 30 countries in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.

Before joining the Foreign Desk, Craig covered state government in Annapolis and the campaign to legalize slot machines. He also has held the Prince GeorgeÂ’’s County police beat, and led a team that was a Pulitzer finalist for its stories about police brutality and misconduct. He joined the Post in 1998 and was previously a reporter for the Raleigh News & Observer.

He’ll begin his new duties on Jan. 11.
