Washington Examiner Gets a New Sports Columnist

thom-loverro.jpg The Washington Examiner has hired Thom Loverro as a new sports columnist. Most recently he worked at TWT, until the paper discontinued its sports section.

He joins the Washington Examiner as a thrice weekly columnist and regular blogger. He will still co-host “The Sports Fix,” a sports-talk radio show that airs daily on ESPN 980.

Loverro joins a group of sports columnists already at the Examiner, including Rick Snider, Phil Wood and Jim Williams.

Editor Stephen Smith says Loverro adds a “dimension we haven’t had before.”

More on Loverro after the jump…

His past: Loverro has been a sportswriter for 18 years, most recently at TWT.

Loverro has covered the World Series; the NFL, NBA and NHL playoffs; world championship fights; and three Olympic Games. He has won 27 national, regional and local journalism awards. In 2009, he was voted Maryland Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

He is the author of 11 books, including “The Washington Redskins: An Authorized History” and “Home of the Game: The Story of Camden Yards.”

Quotes of praise:

“Our sports pages and sports blogs are rapidly gaining popularity, and readers have urged us to expand our coverage,” Washington Examiner Editor Stephen G. Smith said. “Thom nicely complements our other columnists and gives us a dimension we haven’t had before.”

“We’re very excited to add Thom to our team,” Examiner sports editor James Irwin said. “He brings a wealth of experience to our sports commentary and will help us move to the top rank of the nation’s sports sections.”
