Amazon Dominates Book Category in Apple App Store

amazonk.jpgAmazon’s e-book reader has seized the number one spot on the “Top Free Apps” list in the Books category in the Apple App Store. Amazon took over the coveted spot just days after releasing its reader.

Amazon’s new, free iPhone application allows customers to read Kindle books on mobile devices. While the program is intended to add mobile functionality to the Kindle, readers can use the app without purchasing the $359 digital reader. Digital books for the app must be purchased through the Amazon store.

The Stanza e-reader has been downloaded over one million times, and held the top spot on the Apple App Store for months. TeleRead has compared the two readers. Here’s more from Readerville: “If anyone had any doubts about the potential interest in a Kindle app for the iPhone, they can be put to rest … If everyone who downloaded the app bought a book to try it out with, Amazon may have moved more than a half-million titles in less than two days.”
