Literary scandals aren't just reserved to the US

Because right now, in Finland, a new revelation is sending shock waves throughout their literary community. It all began when bestselling author Mauri Sariola died in 1985 after writing nearly ninety novels, and his wife Tuula decided to pick up the slack by writing books of her own. But now, as the wires report, it turns out she didn't actually do that - instead getting ghostwriterly help from her friend Ritva Sarkola for the 16 books published under her own name.

Gummerus Publishers editor Paula Pesonen said the revelation was a shocker. "I am extremely surprised and shocked over the situation, and I can only say that I feel sorry for all parties,' Pesonen said. Sarkola, meanwhile, is putting out a book under her own name that she's actually written. "I am relieved that Tuula admitted the truth about our cooperation in the writing of books," she said. "We both hope that handling the matter in public would end here."

Ah, but will it? Because so many questions remain. Why would Tuula Sarkola agree to do this? Does it echo the longstanding agreement between Michael Gruber & Robert Tanenbaum which famously blew up (and led to Gruber's solo career as a crime novelist)? What was the financial arrangement? And that's just a few of the ones off the top of my head...
