Sister Doing It for Herself*

*Lame? Well, you try writing 4-6 headlines a day!

In yesterday's discussion of Maureen Regan's background, I mentioned that I'd gotten a brief reply to some questions that I'd fired off to her about her career as a literary agent—and I gave some highly speculative theories about why it was hard to find much information about her. Well, that first email was something she'd dashed off fairly quickly in the morning, before heading to the Fox News studios to tape a quick discussion about A Few Good Eggs for Dayside (it's the "Fertility Fallacies" item in the collection of "video" links). She comes off very well in the segment, especially considering that she has to contend with an amiable doofus of an anchor. Anyway, when she got back and had a chance to catch up with the blog, she wanted to clarify the situation a little further, which I'm more than happy to do.

"Judith fought to publish this book," Regan wrote me last night, and given the ease with which she spoke in the Dayside segment, I readily accept that, along with her statement that she had "several other offers," as most publishers probably would jump at the chance to publish an articulate book about infertility issues. "I can assure you that Judith doesn't practice favoritism to her younger sister," she adds. "She is one of the most brilliantly creative publishers I know, and what writer in their right mind would pass on the opportunity?" Again, perfectly true: For all the controversy that surrounds her and her business, nobody's ever suggested Judith Regan doesn't know how to pick product that will move. As for the lack of an online "paper trail," the answer's pretty mundane: Maureen says she just doesn't post to Publishers Lunch that much (and as I pointed out yesterday, all those deals she made before 2000 wouldn't show up in the database anyhow). Plus, of course, she's been busy writing and speaking across the country.

So there you have it...and we'll probably hear from Maureen again eventually, because now I'm going to see if I can finagle my way into whatever launch party they're putting together for The Beauty Buyble, especially if there's a gift bag I can take home to Mrs. Galleycat...
