Last week, I was invited to a reception at the Puck Building where the Puffin Foundation and the Nation Institute were honoring political journalist Amy Goodman with their annual $100,000 prize for "creative citizenship," defined as "challeng[ing] the status quo through distinctive, courageous, imaginative and socially responsible work." The only thing was, I was sworn to double-super secrecy, as the event was supposed to be closed off to journalists and photographers. So no party pics for me; shutterbug Ken Levinson got the nod, however, so here's his portrait of Goodman holding the award while standing with Susan Sarandon. Although Goodman will be using the prize money primarily to fund her radio/TV show, Democracy Now!, she is also the co-author of the bestselling Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back.
