GalleyCat - The First Word On the Book Publishing Industry

Today in Celeb Book Deals

While the chatter won't die down about OJ Simpson's instantly infamous upcoming book and TV special, other celebs of varying note are signing up with publishers, too. First up is "According to Jim" and "Ally McBeal" actress Courtney Thorne-Smith (left), whose comedic novel OUTSIDE IN sold to Ann Campbell at Broadway for publication in September 2007. Publishers Marketplace reports that the novel, agented by Lydia Willis of Paradigm, "captures the sparkling absurdities of life in LA and explores the less glamorous side of success in the entertainment world."

Jennifer Grant's celebrity was inherited - she's the daughter of Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon - and she's capitalizing on that connection for her own deal. THE GOOD STUFF, a memoir about growing up with her famous father, will include letters and photographs that have never been published, reminiscences from family friends and audiotapes of household conversations, recorded by the actor. Dan Strone at Trident Media Group sold Grant's memoir to Vicky Wilson at Knopf, and AP reports that the book won't be in stores until 2008 at the earliest.

Finally, it all comes full circle, as this last deal involves Regan books once more. But instead of Judith, it's Maureen O'Neal making the deal with Laura Dail to buy a fictionalized version of veteran model (and hockey wife) Carol Alt's life. Co-written with Nina Malkin, THIS YEAR'S MODEL is the first "in a series based on Alt's real-life journey from discovery by a random photographer in a restaurant to the cover of hundreds of fashion magazines." So in other words, it's just like Pamela Anderson's "novels," but probably not as over-the-top.
