Dave Eggers’ Voice of Witness Project Gets Big Check from Amazon.com

The San Francisco-based non-profit Voice of Witness announced today that it has received a $25,000 grant from Amazon.com.

Voice of Witness, a division of McSweeney’s Books, was founded by Dave Eggers in 2004. Here is the description on its website: “Using oral history as a foundation, the series depicts human rights crises around the world through the stories of the men and women who experience them.” So far, Voice of Witness has published books about the displaced people of Sudan, survivors of Hurricane Katrina, and others.

Amazon.com has an impressive record supporting small publishers and non-profits. This is the third time we’ve heard from the recipients of big checks from the Seattle-based company in as many months. Founder Jeff Bezos, who several weeks ago urged Princeton grads to “be kind,” seems to be doing a pretty good job leading by example.
