CITY KID: A Writer’s Memoir of Ghetto Life and Post-Soul Success (Viking) is my Memoir Pick of the Day. It will go on sale on April 2nd. Written by Black American author, Nelson George, this memoir gives the reader a glimpse into the life of George’s family: a barely-there father, a strong-willed mother and an even stronger-willed sister. The story was the inspiration for the Golden Globe-winning HBO film, Life Support starring Queen Latifah.

Although this is George’s 15th book, including 6 novels, CITY KID is by far his most personal work. Grammy Award nominee, two-time ASCAP-Deems Taylor award winner and National Book Critics Circle Award nominee, Nelson George has made it his mission to tell the Black American experience through the written word.
