Frank Miller to Direct Spirit Movie

Just as I was getting ready to board my flight to Comic-Con, I got wind of the news that Frank Miller, the writer/artist who helped revitalize the comics industry in the ’80s with The Dark Knight Returns, is going to make his solo film directing debut with an adaptation of the classic Will Eisner strip The Spirit. (Miller co-directed the screen version of his Sin City series with Robert Rodriguez.) This is, quite simply, wicked cool; the Spirit is one of the best characters in the history of comics, and Eisner’s visual innovations were often nothing short of astounding. But this won’t be the first Spirit flick—there was also a TV pilot in ’87 starring Sam Jones, who you might remember as the star of Flash Gordon (and if that Queen song runs through your head all afternoon now, I guess you can blame me).
